Before the Sims 4 Growing Together Expansion Pack, kids in the popular simulation game felt relatively unimportant. Whether your characters had children or not had remarkably little impact on gameplay, so there was no point in adding them to your simulation.

That has changed with The Sims 4 Growing Together Expansion Pack. In this expansion pack, players get a new family friendly neighborhood. This neighborhood includes things like a library and a splash park. The expansion also adds new features including “Dynamics” and “Milestones.”

How Dynamics Work

Dynamics truly revolutionize how children work in the game. Other packs like the Sims 4 Parenthood Expansion Pack have added features that help address the issue, but this expansion is the first to truly force you to think about how characters interact.

Kids can feel jealous of each other and parent interactions, they can have feelings of pride or accomplishment, and they can seek out attention just like any other child. If things go badly, they may end up with a “difficult” relationship. When a child’s relationship becomes difficult, it means they will be mean in their interactions more with the person they have a difficult relationship.

Dynamics can change when ever something new happens. It can be a new family member, a new phase in development, or changes in how they treat each other. It really adds to the gameplay, and makes you focus on family dynamics a lot more.

How Milestones Work

Milestones are a cute little achievement series that rewards you with badges for meeting specific milestones in the game. These milestones are the kind you typically look forward to with real children, such as learning to walk or the first day of school.

This doesn’t have quite the impact the family dynamics feature has, but it does effect gameplay. If you meet specific milestones, your sim child will have a boost in learning in school.

This expansion also comes alongside an update to Sims 4, which is free for everyone. It’s an additional update to babies so that after their initial crib bound period, they have a new infant period where they can do more. Everyone will benefit from the new infant update, but to get the more detailed changes in the game, you’ll need to get the Growing Together Expansion pack. The game mirrors parenting in real life in a lot of ways, with every interaction with your sims mattering in a big way now.

This is a wonderful expansion for Sims 4. The changes this new pack makes forces you to rethink family dynamics, and to look at kids as more than just puppets in your game. With these changes your Sim adults are a lot more like the parents they need to be, and there are real consequences to poor parenting.

There’s also no shortage of family friendly destinations you can take your new sims to in the neighborhood, and those places can shape your sims in new and very real ways. It’s definitely a worthwhile expansion if you’ve always wanted to address the parenting side of The Sims 4.
