Full disclosure here, people, the version of The Dreamy Tavern and Hidden Guidance that I played was in Japanese, so I had to fumble my way through things. As far as I am aware, this lewd RPG does have a translation being worked on as I write this. That means by the time you come to play it, it could have a decent English translation. Still, even though I had no idea what the heck was going on here. I powered through and found this to be a pretty interesting lewd RPG.
All In A Lewd Day's Work
As I said in the intro, The Dreamy Tavern and Hidden Guidance is all in Japanese, so I was only able to pick up so much as far as the story of the game went. Basically, we are working in this fantasy tavern that also serves as some kind of brothel. Adventurers come here to get food and also get a little stress relief, if you get what I am saying. We play the role of one of the people who work here, who is also some kind of adventurer. I think the potential here is pretty high, especially the stuff with the adventurers coming into the tavern, so I am very interested to see how this all works when the translation is fully complete.
Do Not “Overcook” It
The first aspect of the gameplay in The Dreamy Tavern and Hidden Guidance that I want to talk about is the making of the food. This has a kind of Overcooked system about it. By that I mean, you get the order, and then you need to make sure you select the right ingredients, which you then need to press the button to actually make the meal that the adventurer has ordered. As you would expect, as you progress through the game, the orders get more and more complex. There were a few things I was not quite sure of, but for the most part, I was able to figure this out, even though I did not know what was always being said.
Forget The Spoon, I Will Use My Sword
As well as the cooking stuff in the game, I was also getting thrown into combat somewhat regularly in The Dreamy Tavern and Hidden Guidance. While I have no idea what the context for getting into these battles was. The game offered a turn based battle system, and thanks to Google Translate on my phone, I was able to figure things out. The combat is actually pretty fun, and the few battles that I got into were quite exciting as the enemy did not hold back. They came right at me and were pretty aggressive. I thought that the combat had a kind of 16-bit RPG feel about it, if that makes sense.
For The Love Of Fantasy
Sure, I may not have had a clue what was being said, but I can tell you that The Dreamy Tavern and Hidden Guidance is a gorgeous-looking game! It has a few different styles to it. The cooking and tavern sections are done in a kind of isometric viewpoint, which works really well. Combat is done with your enemies at the top of the screen and you at the bottom, with some very nice looking backgrounds, and then the story sections are done with this gorgeous anime-looking artwork. I was able to get a few XXX scenes (no idea how I unlocked them), and I thought that they looked fantastic. In all, I was very impressed by what I saw, and I got a massive kick out of the high fantasy anime look that everything had.
It is a little harsh of me to give a game like The Dreamy Tavern and Hidden Guidance a final score, as the issues of not being able to understand what I was doing were completely on me. However, I was having fun here, and while the story was not something I could follow, I was liking the fantasy vibes and the character designs. Plus, I thought the mixture of cooking gameplay and RPG combat, and progression was pretty cool. I will 100 percent come back to this when the translation is done.
Pros:
- I thought the game looked great
- The cooking stuff was fun
- I liked how challenging the combat was
- The fantasy setting here is something I thought was cool
Cons:
- As of writing, the game is all in Japanese
- I hope the translation does not take so long that I forget about this game!
