Another film game - you know what that means. It'll be another schlock-fest of remarkably average gameplay that does just about enough to appease fans of the recent movie release. However, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn could be a little different. Surely there might be a little more effort to create a canon entry to the video game series?

There's one factor about this game that presents either a concern or a saving grace. That is - The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn's release was on quite a grand scale, being offered to all consoles, handhelds, and even mobile devices. Either the developers had a lot of faith in the quality of this game, or it's mass marketing to gain sales over what they think might be ill-received. So which is it?

So, Where's the Unicorn?

Those who have delved into the Tintin universe will know that he is a journalist that makes the industry look more glamorous than it really is. Frequently he'll find himself amid wild adventures, and this time - he's on a quest to find a stolen ship with the name of the Unicorn. Surprise, he's not looking for the secrets of a fantastical creature.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn's narrative sort of aligns with the film. The visuals certainly do as well, aligning its color palette with the sea-faring theme. The gameplay is a platforming puzzler having Tintin and his pal Captain Haddock moving through each level doing the basics of what a platformer demands.

As expected, the overall gameplay of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn isn't revolutionary. It doesn't offer anything more than what it takes to create a palatable playthrough. You'll spend time completing basic puzzles, overcoming non-invasive obstacles - even play some simple mini-games. While each aspect arguably looks good, the mechanics are bland, dull - and downright easy.

That's not to say that The Adventures of Tintin is terrible - but it isn't great. Fans of the franchise could pull a little enjoyment from this immersing themselves in the world of Tintin. Maybe even those who liked the movie might get a couple hours of entertainment out of this. But this is by no means a revolutionary platformer.

It's Definitely No Secret

It's clear that the developers took the path of 'let's just get this on as many consoles as possible.' Sadly, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn fits the stereotype of a movie game - just about passable, but will enrage gamers who shelled out full-price for it. Anybody looking for something to play over a weekend will find themselves finishing the story pretty quickly.

There are franchised platformer puzzlers that fare better in terms of fun and replayability - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, perhaps? The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is exclusively for franchise and film fans only - and even then, you might feel a little miffed. No secret here, just another movie game.

Pros:

  • Visuals meet the theme of the narrative and film
  • Most of the game is quite polished
  • Easy-to-learn puzzles mechanics for younger gamers

Cons:

  • The entire playthrough feels bland and boring
  • Nothing diverse about the game's story and the films one
  • Most puzzles are overly simplistic
