The Shin Megami Tensei series is a respected, but fairly niche series of RPGs that managed to eventually spin off into the massively popular Persona games. Still, there’s plenty to enjoy in the series original games, and Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga is an incredibly unique RPG experience that will satiate any RPG fan’s hunger.

So Much Story

Being a Shin Megami game, there was no chance that Digital Devil Saga wouldn’t have a massive story that would capture you from start to finish. In this game, players take control of Serph, leader of the Embryon gang.

Soon into the story, a ball of light covers the entire world (known as the Junkyard) and releases dark demonic spirits from everyone on the planet. This strange circumstance also has the side effect of making all people hunger for human flesh. As you might guess, this also soon leads to some very complex moral situations where some members of society indulge in cannibalism whilst others reject it as the world turns into disarray.

It’s your job to lead your gang of comrades across the Junkyard, fighting off five other gangs you meet along the way whilst making use of the demonic presence that curses the world around you. Your ultimate destination is anywhere away from the Junkyard: namely, Nirvana.

Life on the Junkyard

Entering the world of Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga is one that holds up well, despite being just under 20 years old. The art style used in the game is of a cell shaded look, some years before games like Borderlands really popularised the style. It does wonders for the PS2 graphics, and players will find that the interesting plot points and characters maintain their attention even with some fairly basic graphical capabilities.

It must be said that the world of Digital Devil Saga is not for the faint of heart. The oddball nature and weirdness seen in earlier entries can be found here in abundance, with characters turning into their demonic counterparts, which treats players to crazy and imaginative transformation scenes that are entracing as they are strange.

For example, the character Argilla’s demon form has breasts made of sharp-toothed mouths, and the game has plenty more wacky demon designs up its sleeves.

A Classic RPG

Being a turn-based RPG, Digital Devil Saga has many of the same features as games like Final Fantasy X. That said, there are enough changes to the formula to keep things interesting. For example, the game has special movies, which take up part of your health points rather than mana or action points.

There is also the layer of complexity that is added through swapping between the player’s human and emonic forms, which helps to unlock combo moves for your team during combat. Adding to the classic turn-based format, you can also gain extra turns by attacking goes using damage types that particular enemies are weak to.

Unfortunately, the game also suffers from some of role playing games’ worst habits. The amount of random encounters sprinkled generously throughout the game is incredibly frustrating at times. Players should expect to be frequently interrupted to fight foes they’ve seen many times before, ultimately halting the story in its tracks.

6

While certainly not for everyone, gamers who want to see where the Persona series came from, and for those who enjoy the Final Fantasy series, Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga is an incredibly interesting RPG that, despite its aged factors, excels at presenting an exciting story.
