Remnants of R'lyeh

Remnants of R'lyeh is a unique horror game that takes place partially underwater, and partially on dry land. The water elements give you some verticality to explore, allowing you to sink to the depths or rise to the surface. In the storyline, you are the lone survivor from an attack by merpeople and the eldritch. You must now escape from the tentacled claws of Cthulhu before he finds you once more.

Artwork is creepy

The art in this game is perfect for an underwater horror and helps create an immersive experience. Every creepy crawly thing you see is highly detailed and horrifying to look at. Weapons look authentically rusty for an underwater experience, and the lighting adds to the mood.

The intro shows classic pencil sketches done to model true Lovecraftian lore. Moments after admiring this piece, you are plunged into darkness with weird and frankly disturbing creatures around. The rest of the game features similar, extremely disturbing beasties.

The game has a definite BioShock vibe to it, especially as far as the artwork goes.

Needs more underwater time

The game is put together well, has a great storyline, and some engaging elements to it such as the vertical properties of the game. Although the game is still in its early stages, there are ways it could be improved. At this time, there are two major sections of the game. An underwater section you have to escape from, followed by a mysterious island. The underwater parts are, frankly, the most fun. It would make the game a lot more enjoyable if the game included longer underwater sections or made it more difficult to escape.

Fun puzzles

In order to escape, you’ll need to solve some puzzles. This can involve items, manipulating levers, or searching for missing items. These puzzles are relatively simple but made more complex by the fact that you have to do them while escaping monsters. While the underwater section is more interesting than the Island, both are unique and interesting in their own right.

A few bugs

There are a few bugs in the demo, but its likely that these will be polished up for the full game. In the demo, there are a few grammatical errors in the text. There are also a few errors like monsters being able to glitch through the walls. The sound can also sometimes get out of sync, making it a little less creepy than it should be. Overall, these bugs are relatively minor. It’s expected the game will improve for the full release.
