Nekojishi

I have played some weird lewd visual novel games in my time, but Nekojishi is one of the weirdest. Before, we get into this, I do have to say that this is a free to play game! Now before you start rolling your eyes and thinking that this game is going to nickel and dime you, I can tell you it is not like that at all. As a matter of fact, I did not even have a proper look at the DLC as I was more than satisfied with the gameplay experience, I got without spending a penny.

Samurai Gay Cats!

This reference to the Samurai Pizza Cats to kick this thing off could be my most obscure reference yet! Nekojishi has a story that I have to tell you works. I am starting with that because as I get into this, it is going to get very weird. We play as a young man who is trying to live a good college life away from the pressures he faces at home from his family, things are going pretty well until…..

Third Eye Blind

Our “hero” has this third eye opened and this lets him see things that normal people cannot such as three cat type gods that want to try and help/interfere with his life. These cats become more than just guardians and friends and ultimately, we are trying to see which one of these cat gods people we want to hook up with. Look, I know that many of you are yelling “what???” at the screen right now. However, as weird as this is the story works.

I Would Have Watched This While Eating Cheerios!

What I mean by that is that the characters in Nekojishi are the kind of characters that I could have imagined being in a cartoon series back in the 90s on a Saturday morning, without all of the lewd content of course. The three cat gods each have their own physical style and they look great, the artist here did a wonderful job of making a world that looks “normal” however, there is also some mystical and magical elements here too.

The Illusion Of Choice

I would have to say that Nekojishi is as probably as close to a visual novel being called a kinetic visual novel without actually being one. You do get to make some choices in the game as you progress through the story. However, I felt that none of these mattered all that much and it tended to be about what cat God I wanted to be on the screen by my side. It often felt that many of the choices I made did not matter at all as the story was going to progress in a particular direction no matter what I did. To be fair, the story is fun and I was interested so I am not hating on the lack of interactivity too much.

I had way more fun with Nekojishi than I thought I would. I am glad that I just jumped into this and gave it an honest try. I think had a friend described the game to me, I probably would have passed. The free to play nature of it and the fact the art is so great makes this a game that you really do not have an excuse not to try. Just know going in that the choices you make do not really matter and that you are here for the story they are telling and you will have a fun time.

Pros:

  • You have three cat gods to hang out with
  • Even though the premise is super weird, the game owns it and it works
  • The art in this game is very well done
  • Overall, I liked the story that was being told here

Cons:

  • Your choices very rarely feel like they actually matter
  • I had no desire to check out any of the paid DLC at all
