There is a noticeable lack of arcade racer games on the market, and even fewer featuring motorcycles—Moto Racer 4 seeks to remedy that. With some high-octane races scattered around multiple maps, alongside an exciting multiplayer element, Moto Racer 4 takes the lessons from the previous iterations of the series and improves upon them in order to be competitive. However, can it stand out among the other motorcycle or dirt-bike games like Ride 4 or Monster Energy Supercross, or the arcade puzzle-racer like Trials: Evolution?
How Arcade Can It Be?
Moto Racer 4 has a lot of modes and upgrades for individual bikes. However, it is limited by only 14 playable maps, and while that seems like a lot, being that most are short in terms of lap size—it lends itself to a good bit of repetition. That being said, a majority of the game is also somewhat difficulty locked. With a strange system in place, Moto Racer 4 only allows progression upon attaining stars for doing well in races or winning—the only problem is that losing races, consequently, has you lose stars.
With that simple system, progression becomes somewhat tedious, as to lose means to basically take a step backward. And, while the mechanic itself isn’t bad, if the gameplay feels unfair then it might be an unwanted nuisance—and Moto Racer 4 does help itself make a good impression in that regard.
Physics. Maketh. Motorcycles.
One of the other most noticeable things about Moto Racer 4 comes in its presentation—it’s not very good. With an extremely unsteady framerate even though the game boasts some extremely muddy textures—nothing stands out particularly pretty. Compound that with the fact that no matter what you do, your bike simply does not adhere to physics. It’s understood that arcade racers can bend the rules when it comes to physics, but at least have some sort of implementation of gravity so the bike doesn’t ‘float’ every time it turns or takes a jump.
Where Does This Fit In?
The most difficult thing to discern with Moto Racer 4 is where it fits in and who the audience might be. While dirt-bike or motorcycle games are a dime a dozen, most relegated to simulation like MotoGP, the best motorcycle game in recent memory was Days Gone and motorcycles were only a feature in that game.
That being said, while this game offers fun with its multiplayer, its limited by its graphics, physics, and level design. It’s not quite arcade-enough to be Burnout, puzzle-based enough to be Trials, and fun enough to be Mario Kart 64. With all that in mind, it’s got a few levels that make it easy to zone out on and enjoy, but there isn’t much else going for Moto Racer 4 that isn’t done better in other games.
- Fun multiplayer with friends
- Enough levels for variety
- Arcade racers are rare
- Lack of physics
- Tedious progression system
- AI can simply ‘speed up’ even if you’re winning
- Muddy textures, low framerate
