Off-road racing games are not anything new. But it's not often to see a series so refined and dedicated to the motocross sport. MX vs. ATV Untamed continues where its prequels left off to further develop the experience of thrilling dirt roads and dangerous aerial flair. Satisfying its niche fan base is apparently still on the cards.

While I do not understand the intricacies behind motocross - events attract sizeable crowds. Enough so that there has been justification in creating a few video games based on its offerings. The premise does look intriguing, and the variety of options vast - this could be a racer that pulls an unsuspecting gamer into its allure.

Untame in the Membrane

You might be totally inept in your sports abbreviations just like myself - MX stands for motocross, and ATV is an all-terrain vehicle. They are being pitted against each other in this long-running series - and this time - it's untamed. That whole concept begs the question of whether this testosterone-filled, versatile racer was ever tame in the first place?

If anything - MX vs. ATV Untamed is certainly not short of options when it comes to a racer. You'll be presented with several game modes to endure, each with its own challenges. Many vehicles are available to select - including varieties of dirt bikes, monster trucks, and quad bikes. Like any racer - the objective is to get your motorbike or truck to the finish line ahead of all.

Being in the motocross setting - accomplishing that is a bit more challenging with the series of obstacles you'll face. Overcoming hills, bends, aerial landings, and comprising dirt paths are there for you to navigate. While the environments look good - and the visual experience resembles much of the actual experience - MX vs. ATV Untamed feels like it's a few pennies short of a shilling.

In every game mode, there doesn't seem much to immerse you in the gameplay. The racing mechanics are refined from previous titles, and the tricks you can perform certainly jolt player interest. Nothing else feels urgent enough to make you want to compete in these races - besides testing out the vast number of vehicles. Once you've done that, it feels a bit barren.

Feels Pretty Subdued For Something Wild

It's instantly apparent that MX vs. ATV Untamed caters to a specific clientele. It doesn't feel that any player taking a general approach to the game will know what to do or understand why the translated gameplay is unique. Fans of the sport have identified the title as one of the better ones in the series. But without an understanding of the concept - it's hard to know why.

Playing the game as an outsider to motocross made me feel as this was a polished version of Trials Ride. Something we used to casually play when we had a few moments to kill. Even then, the thrills the game is supposed to provide don't resonate. If you are an MX fan - you'll probably really enjoy this clean racing experience - otherwise, you may conjure pretty blase feelings about it.

Pros:

  • Visuals resonate with the complete off-road experience of MX and ATVs
  • The unique driving styles and courses are very polished
  • Faithful to the motocross sport and beyond

Cons:

  • Not adaptable for anyone unaware of the sport
  • The game feels without purpose
  • Short playthrough despite multiple game modes
