Mechajammer

Most cyberpunk-style games will dazzle you with neon lights, high-tech, and polished urban scenery. Not Mechajammer, though. This game is going down the other end of the spectrum in bringing the grittiest and greasiest dystopian world. That opposite design choice already is setting some intriguing undertones for the upcoming top-down RPG.

We can safely say that Mechjammer is one of the more unique-looking cyberpunk games out there at the moment. The dark atmosphere clearly is bringing some thrilling narrative here. Every asset in the game's visuals looks like it has some story to tell, and the classic RPG-style gameplay seems as if it's going to bring it to life. We think there might be a fair bit to be excited about in Mechajammer.

Kill the Neon Lights

You get the feeling that Mechajammer is delivering a perfect gaming formula here. It's touching on the classic visuals of an isometric RPG game with holistic diversity in gameplay. Players will be able to approach the game's rich storyline and open world in the way they want - all guns blazing or as quiet as a mouse.

Paired with retro sound design, refined tactical turn-based combat, and deep character customization, it would seem Mechajammer is the perfect gameplay storm. There already is enough footage and screenshots that this game could rank as one better game of our time.

There are branching dialogue options, meaningful character development, and a city that looks alive just as much as dead. The excitement in exploration is driven further by the vehicle system that draws heavily on ragged motorbikes. It all feels a bit like an 80s dystopian film, but most players would find absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Mechajammer looks to be a game that ticks all the classic RPG boxes. There are seemingly puzzles and challenges well suited to the theme and narrative. Not to mention combat that's thoughtful and engaging. It's difficult to even raise any points of concern about the future release - but we'll have to wait and see if it delivers on what already looks promising.

A Step Back Into Dystopia

Some serious Shadowrun franchise vibes are running on Mechajammer, though it isn't simply a copy-paste job. The visual prowess and unique interface behind the game look to run on the idea of rekindling a classic RPG, but in its own format and at its own pace. That premise alone makes the game exciting to play - dabbling in the contemporary but latching on to the classic.

Without being able to play it yet, time will tell how Mechajammer comes to fruition. What we can say at the moment, it would be hard to find a demographic of players that wouldn't be intrigued to play it. Perhaps casual players, maybe? But any RPG fan could already see a decent offering incoming.

Pros:

  • An RPG that makes the cyberpunk theme their own
  • Several diverse gameplay elements seamlessly entwined with each other
  • Exciting turn-based combat

Cons:

  • No release date yet
  • It may not appeal to casual players
