Something is amazing about horror games that keep you on edge, but not too much on edge that you would not want to play the game anymore. The cover of darkness is a great technique used throughout all of these horror games and this gives the game a sense of a cover of mystery. What happens when someone uses usually go happy characters and puts them in a dark and horror-like game? What is like to have a fan-made game that uses big names and puts them into a horror indie game? That is what we are here to talk about today. I present to you, Mario: The Music Box.

Game storyline

Mario The Music Box is a 2D game that is played out to be a horror game. The game stars both of your loved characters Mario and Luigi. At the beginning of the game, you will start with Mario in the woods.

He is making his way to an abandoned mansion where there as been reports of missing people. As Mario makes his way to the mansion, he has to break in the mansion to gain entrance. He has a look around and wonders in a room that has a music box in it. As Mario goes to pick up the box the entrance to the mansion disappears, leaving Mario stranded in the mansion. Throughout the game, you will need to solve puzzles and find clothes so that you uncover the mysteries of the game.

Gameplay

Throughout the game, you will notice there is a journal feature built into the game. This will help you to keep track of all puzzles and clues that you have uncovered. A nice little feature that you may love is that you can watch Mario’s handwrite and hoover over the paper as a little animation. As the player, you may also appreciate that there are over 200 pictures that are well thought out and well-drawn for the cut scenes. You will notice that the interface is quite dark, however, making visibility quite hard to see. The different rooms that you encounter will seem to look alike. This could be due to the poor visibility that the game gives. As we all know that horror games add this to give a sense of mystery, this would seem to be overplayed and almost annoying in this game. Still, the storyline is easy to follow despite some confusion as to why Mario and Lugi are the main characters in this game.

My verdict/review

So straight away I am giving this game a 6 out of 10. So as a fan-made game, the game is done pretty well done. As it is a fan-made game, I have to give them a score for the effort at least as it is pretty hard to make fan-made games. There is a storyline to be followed which is great. You are not mindlessly walking around doing nothing. However, throwing in Mario and Lugi in the mix of this theme of the game just does not sit right and frankly does not makes sense to me at all.

The cover of darkness throughout the whole game can be a bit annoying. At first, it is understandable as to why they have done it. Just about any horror game that I can think of uses the cover of darkness to add to the mystery of the game. But with this game, it makes it hard for things to stand out and all the rooms seem to repeat and are a lot of looks like.

6

Besides that, though, the game really is a great game to play to pass the time around. For a fan-made game, an indie game this is a great game to add to your horror playlist.

Pros

  • The storyline is great to follow
  • Great illustrations
  • A nice variety of cut scenes

Cons

  • Not sure why Mario and Lugi are in this
  • The cover of darkness is overplayed here
  • The rooms seem to repeat making it hard to make your way through the game
