Make Your Kingdom

Make Your Kingdom is one of the most interesting city building games that I have seen in a while. I have loved games like this since the days of the Super Nintendo and this one has a very interesting style. I think that what makes this game very interesting is that the game is trying to be very deep in what it requires you to do to ensure your settlement thrives, but at the same time, it is also accessible for people who are not veterans of this genre.

Winter Is Coming!

The whole premise of Make Your Kingdom is that you are the founding father (mother, person, or whatever you prefer) of this new kingdom and if the kingdom survives and thrives is all down to the decisions that you make. There is no deep story here as to be expected, but there is one element that I thought was neat and that is the way you are trying to make it to and through the winter. It adds a real element of stress and unpredictability to the game that I thought was cool.

Keeping People Happy

If you have played any game like this before, be it Sim City or even something like Animal Crossing. You know that keeping people happy is a massive part of the game. Each citizen needs to have their needs met the most basic of which are a roof over their head and a full belly. What is kind of interesting here is that if a citizen is not happy, they will not just bitch and moan, they will go and join the orc army (yes there are orcs in this game) and try to destroy your kingdom!

Managing Your Resources

As is the case with all games of this style, Make Your Kingdom puts a major emphasis on managing your resources. There are many different resources that you need to manage such as those for making buildings and food. These can then be expanded on and you need to look after them as you need buildings that are about food, for example, to keep working so that your citizens are being fed. There is always something to do and part of the challenge of a game like this is managing it all at the same time.

Facing the Wrath!

There are two main obstacles when it comes to your kingdom thriving. First of all, are the orcs who will attack you. You will need to fight these guys off, but more often than not they will do damage and you will have to rebuild. You will also have to rebuild when mother nature decides to strike and you get hit with a flood, fire, or something else that causes a great deal of damage.

Toy Story

The presentation of the game is very interesting. Make Your Kingdom has a kind of cutesy style going on with the visuals and I find it very appealing. The characters ranging from your own citizens to the orcs that fight you have a kind of wooden toy look to them that I really do think is neat. I feel that the game looks like a more “rounder” version of Minecraft in many ways. You can also take direct control of one of the citizens and view your kingdom from their point of view which is really cool.

Pros:

• The presentation of the game has a lot of charm to it
• I like the way that disgruntled citizens will join the orc army
• Keeping on top of your resources is very addictive
• It is cool how you can take control of a citizen

Cons:

• It may get frustrating if you have to keep rebuilding due to “disasters!
• Perhaps a little bit of story would have been ok?
