A friend sent me a text that literally said, dude have you seen Interdimensional Vending Machine? I had no idea what he was talking about, but I was intrigued, so I checked it out, and I was blown away. As soon as I saw the one paragraph blurb about what this game was, I knew I had to check it out. This is for those of you who love the weird, unusual, creepy, and just downright unsettling when it comes to your horror video games, and honestly, horror is the only genre that I think this bizarre game belongs in. There may not be a ton of actual gameplay here, but this was something that I just could not stop playing!

Spare A Few Bucks?

There is not much of a story at play in Interdimensional Vending Machine, but the premise is pretty easy to figure out. We play the role of a strange-looking young woman who is some kind of alien or from a different dimension, or something. Anyway, we are down on our luck, and our only goal in life is to beg for money so that we can buy food to eat from this rather strange vending machine, which gets new food items each time we use it. I loved the way that the game does not give you much, but it is so weird; I found myself fascinated by who this girl was and why this vending machine exists. The fact that the game left most of my questions unanswered made my imagination run wild!

Put Your Hand In Your Pocket!

There are two aspects to the “gameplay” of Interdimensional Vending Machine, and we will start with the begging as that is what leads to us being able to use the vending machine. We just sit there and wait for people passing by to throw us a little bit of money; we watch our money go up, and then when we have enough, we can use the vending machine. The cops may harass us, and we have to move, but that is all there is to the gameplay. Even if the cops take us away, we just end up straight back on the streets. I wish that there was a little more interactivity in regards to the begging, as you really do just sit there, waiting for your money to go up.

Slamming In Those Coins

The real draw of the gameplay in Interdimensional Vending Machine is, of course, when you do make enough money from your begging to be able to use this strange vending machine. You never know what the vending machine is going to offer, and it just gets more and more bizarre each time you use it. It may start off relatively normal with stuff like soda, but then you get stuff like centipede soup! The more you consume a certain item, the more you will start to transform, and in the case of the centipede soup, you will actually turn into a creepy centipede. The whole body horror thing of your transforming is what the game is all about, and it is very impressive as to how many transformations there are in the game. While there is not much in the way of actual interactivity, I still found this to be pretty addictive.

I Don’t Want To Watch, But I Can’t Look Away

You will be mind-blown by the art in Interdimensional Vending Machine, and if you have a thing for horror and gross, sinister-looking creatures, you are in for an absolute treat here. Some of the transformations in how she actually transforms are truly grotesque, and the quality of the animation is amazing! It is the kind of thing that is gross, but at the same time, it is so weird and so well done, you simply cannot look away. Some are better than others, and once you have seen one full transformation, you have seen it all. However, unlocking them all and taking them all in, as I said before, is very addictive. Especially with how well done they are. Plus, the actual stuff that the vending machine offers is really well designed too, and there is a great mixture of things that look relatively normal and then others that are truly gross and have you, first of all, thinking, “don’t eat that!” but then you kind of want her to, as you know the end result is going to be messed up!

8.5

While Interdimensional Vending Machine may not have a great deal of gameplay and it may be way too weird, creepy, and just generally bizarre for some people. If you do like the weird, unusual, and gross, especially mixed with horror and body horror, you will have a blast with this. I do wish that it had a little more going on as far as the gameplay goes, but this was still a very fun experience and one that I would love to see a sequel to, with more gameplay elements and a bit more of a fleshed-out story.

Pros:

  • The art in this game is really phenomenal
  • There are lots of crazy and creepy transformations
  • I liked how the story left most things to my imagination
  • Unlocking the transformations was addictive

Cons:

  • There is not much actual gameplay on offer here
  • A little more story would have been appreciated
