The number of card games we've seen in recent years has been astounding. Suddenly, every franchise has to develop a take on the card genre, let alone the vast number of indie games created around the concept. Inscryption is another card game, however. It's going things a bit differently. This game wants to bring you into the thick of the card slapping action.

This is a card game where each move will have visible consequences. Inscryption sucks you into a dark world where you are playing your cards in the first person, unlike most of the genre. The premise is intriguing, and the challenge appears mesmerizing. Is this deck-builder a game that will stand tall against the masses of other similar offerings?

If You Play Your Cards Right

Inscryption is definitely a different card game. The visuals make that apparent straightaway. These environments you play in drop players right on the game board as you use your cards to overcome the challenges and consequences before you. So what sets the game apart from the other deck builders that run riot on the market?

Mechanically, Inscryption isn't just a card game. The gameplay offers a healthy mixture of minimalist deck building, escape room style puzzles and psychological horror. Does this genre mishmash work? Surprisingly, it does. It compounds to take a thrilling experience to the card game, easy to get into yet increasingly hard to master.

Your deck of cards will feature woodland animals, where your ultimate goal is to use them to subdue your opponent through onboard battle. Cards are laid out in rows, where they will proceed to attack whatever cards are on the enemy's side. You'll need to strategically place them to eliminate all opponent's cards to directly attack and win. It's simple enough to start, but there are plenty of twists and turns that will prevent you from achieving an easy victory.

What makes Inscryption stand out is all the well-crafted animations that represent each move. It's like a little mechanical house of horrors and really contributes to this bizarre journey you undertake on the board. It's a one-of-a-kind card game at that, and it's a lot of fun. However, it's worth noting that your first run-in could be painful as you come to terms with the mechanics.

All Hands on Deck

Inscryption is worth the time of day. It has more effort and passion put into gameplay and visuals than most recent card games combined. There's definitely an attempt here to show what can be done with the card genre and what a bit of realism (kind of) can do to the gameplay. Not since Slay The Spire have you felt so immersed in an elementary card game.

Alas, Inscryption also isn't for the faint of heart. The horror themes, the fast pace of the game, and some of the frustrations behind learning may turn away subsets of players. That said, everyone should give it a try on the principle that it's something different. It feels like a complete experience beyond the core mechanics and can be enjoyed as such.

Pros:

  • One of the most unique card games around
  • Beautiful animations and visuals
  • A thrilling card game experience that continually pulls you in

Cons:

  • The themes and pace of gameplay might turn off more casual players
  • The game can be a bit tricky to learn at first

Game Reviews

Inscryption is a dark and twisted deck-building game. The game takes players on a journey through a mysterious forest filled with strange creatures and twisted magic. It's an amalgamation of genres featuring elements of deck-building, survival horror, and roguelike gameplay.

Deep In the Forest

The game's premise is simple: players are trapped in a cabin in the middle of a dark forest and must use their wits and card-playing skills to escape. However, as the game progresses, it becomes clear that there's more to this cabin and the forest than meets the eye. The game's story is incredibly well-crafted, with unexpected twists and turns that will keep players on the edge of their seats. The game's presentation is also top-notch, with a creepy and atmospheric soundtrack that perfectly captures the game's eerie vibe.

One of the standout features of Inscryption is its unique deck-building system. Players start with a basic deck of cards but can acquire new cards as they progress through the game. Each card has its own unique abilities, and players must strategically choose which cards to include in their deck. Players can also upgrade their cards by sacrificing other cards, making for a deep and engaging gameplay loop.

Build Your Deck

In addition to the deck-building aspect of the game, Inscryption also features survival horror elements. As players explore the forest, they'll encounter various creatures that they must defeat using their cards. However, these creatures are not easy to defeat, and players must carefully manage their resources and health in order to survive. The game's difficulty is pitched just right, with a gradual increase in challenge as players progress through the game.

Another standout feature of Inscryption is its roguelike elements. Each playthrough is procedurally generated, meaning that no two playthroughs are the same. This adds a level of replayability to the game, as players can continue to play through the game to discover new cards, encounters, and events.

The game's visuals are also impressive, with a unique and stylized art style that perfectly complements the game's eerie vibe. The game's visuals are reminiscent of a classic PC game, with pixelated graphics and a dark, brooding atmosphere.

Conclusion

Overall, Inscryption is an excellent game that is sure to appeal to fans of deck-building, survival horror, and roguelike games. Its unique combination of genres, engaging gameplay, and deep strategy make for a truly memorable gaming experience. The game's story is also incredibly well-crafted, with unexpected twists and turns that will keep players hooked from start to finish. If you're looking for a game that will keep you on the edge of your seat and test your card-playing skills, then Inscryption is definitely worth checking out.
