Hunted: The Demon’s Forge is a 2011 game that crosses genres. It has overarching fantasy elements, but can also be a hack n’ slash, stealth shooter, and RPG. If you enjoy a variety of different gaming styles and want a game that embraces them all, Hunted: The Demon’s Forge has all these and more.

The game centers around Caddoc and E’lara, two mercenaries just trying to make it in a difficult world. Caddoc is the cool-headed brains of the party, while E’lara is a bit more feisty. Throughout the game the duo participates in engaging chatter that will leave you laughing while you brain all the bad guys coming your way.

Hunted has many great features to it, but to be fair those interesting features are balanced by some pretty serious gameplay issues.

AI is too dumb to be useful

The game has two main characters and is designed for co-op. A friend can take on the role of the other main character, and you can smash your way through bosses and lesser bad guys to your heart’s content. Unfortunately, if you want to play the game solo the AI often fails in basic ways, including offering you health potions they have when you are dying, or prioritizing nearby enemies. The results can be painful and awkward, robbing Hunted: The Demon’s Forge of much of its fun.

Awkward gameplay

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge uses gameplay very similar to the style used in Gears of War but fails to reach the same levels of modern gameplay. The animations are poorly done, backdrops often dark and lifeless, and gameplay navigation leaves much to be desired. The overall result is a game that feels like it should be amazing but falls short in almost every respect.

Stellar voice acting

One feature that makes up for some of the areas Hunted: The Demon’s Forge lacks in is the voice acting of the main characters. Their banter is surprisingly well done, and leaves you laughing most of the way through. The voice actors truly seem to imbody the spirit of these characters and bring life to them that their poor animation just can’t do.

PC Players lose out

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge is designed to be played on a range of different platforms, but online gaming barely runs on PC. Since Co-op is the life of the game, this makes it so much less rewarding if you are playing on PC versus other platforms.

This game has all the right elements to be a game changer in the field. It’s fresh take on hack n’ slash could have been a dazzling addition to the genre, but it’s lack of polish drags it down. Almost every great feature this game has is balanced with a problem that drags it back down. While this game isn’t unplayable, there are probably better ways to spend your time and money.

Pros:

  • Great voice acting
  • Elements of good gameplay
  • Co-op is fun

Cons:

  • Poor graphics
  • Poor animation
  • Difficult navigation
  • Dumb AI
