Genesis Alpha One

There's often one omitted idea in these great space exploration games we've seen over generations - the intricacies of space travel. Genesis Alpha One is one of those games that makes sure the world understands what goes on behind the scenes during interplanetary travel. No matter how trivial - you're going to know about it!

The concept of Genesis Alpha One may be totally uninteresting to casual players. However, the idea will be treasured by aspiring aerospace engineers or those that enjoy task management games. Mind you, for such a bland set of game mechanics - Genesis Alpha One does actually look good. I think it's worth seeing what these spaceship assistants get up to.

Let's Do Space Exploration

If you are assigned the duties of a space engineer, there won't be too much of a narrative surrounding the game? Well, Genesis Alpha One surprisingly does everything in its power to make the game a lot more interesting below the surface. You'll play as a colonizer tasked with building up a spaceship and crew, flourishing enough to successfully discover another planet to live on.

How will you accomplish that, you ask? Genesis Alpha One is more of a rogue-like game experience with parallel city-builder mechanics. The core components of the game force you to manage and gather resources. All this while fending off intruding enemies. Then taking care of your rooms to make sure your ship is running at optimum efficiency. After a few hours of grinding it all out - then you can start curating your vehicle with the cool stuff like guns and shields.

The grind in Genesis Alpha One may seem relentless and buggy at times. However, the visuals help the immersion factor. The physics and animations aren't fantastic, but at very least, the environment models do bring an aura of engaging space travel. Even one of those damned pirates board your ship and start wailing around.

Genesis Alpha One is an ambitious project that aims to give a trivial idea an exciting new edge. The problem is everything feels cluttered. The variety in gameplay, such as crew management, strategic shipbuilding, and mining resources, doesn't run consistently. It's ever broken up by the combat that is fun at first but then becomes frustrating.

In Space, Nobody Can Hear You Scream

The best way to describe Genesis Alpha One is a game that is Dead Space produced by the Three Stooges. It's serious and wants to bring urgency to gameplay, but it feels downright comical at times. AI characters, both friend and foe, seem a little over-enthused. The 2D UI screens make the game look unfinished. There's not much to really piece this game together.

What we can't take away from Genesis Alpha One are its ambitions. Perhaps if there was more polish into the game, the experience could have felt more holistic than what we got. It is worth playing for the concept, and there are a few hours of entertainment to be had for a more tailored player. It's safe to say that it's not the greatest thing in the universe, though.

Pros:

  • Varied gameplay that enhances trivial tasks
  • Spaceship and planetary visuals highlight the adventures
  • Strategic approaches to shipbuilding keep players immersed

Cons:

  • The game feels cluttered with different aspects of gameplay
  • UI and visuals are inconsistent with each other
  • Character animations look silly at times
