Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an awesome looking action RPG that is due out in a few weeks as I write this. I had the chance to play the game and thought that it was a lot of fun. It has a very cool setting, a badass protagonist, and a great progression system that keeps you going but is not overly complicated. This could be one of the sleeper hits of the year and the fact it is coming to Game Pass on Xbox day one is pretty awesome. I have a feeling this will be the kind of game I play on Game Pass, but then end up actually buying.
Messing With What You Don’t Understand
As soon as I saw the first trailer for Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, the premise of the story had me hooked. In this world, mankind was fooling around and they opened the door to The Great Blow which unleased some angry gods who with an undead army are going to decimate the entire world. However, that is where our heroine, Nor Vanek comes in, a badass in the Coalition Army, she is joined by a fox creature called Enik who is also a god, but a god that is willing to help her stop these gods from destroying the world.
Sticking With Our Furry Friend
The first thing I want to talk about when it comes to the gameplay of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is Enik. I am loving Enik, he is such an interesting character who manages to look cute, badass, and also a little mysterious all at once. However, Enik is not just here to be a story device. Enik is a huge part of the gameplay. From helping you in combat by charging up your weapons with magic to allowing you to teleport which can be used during battles, but more importantly, as you traverse the land. Having a little buddy/side character with you is certainly nothing new, but I am really digging what they have done here with Enik.
Keep The Souls Out Of Your Mouth
Look, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has that Souls Lite tab attached to it and that is just the way things are these days, every other game is either a Souls like or a Souls Lite style of game it seems. However, the gameplay here looks awesome and the title is actually a huge part of what to expect. You can hack and slash here and do finishing movies, but you also have these flintlock weapons that can get ammo back depending on how you finish an enemy off. The combat is so satisfying, it is deep and you can certainly develop your own style, but from what I have experienced so far, it is not frustratingly difficult. Sure you have to learn how to play it and some bosses may take multiple tries, but this is fun and not frustrating and that gets two huge thumbs up from me.
I Would Pay To Watch That In A Theatre
Style wise, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is awesome! As I said I was pretty much sucked in right away by the fantasy style story that was being told here, but it is really the way the story is presented that had me so interested in this. To start with, this game looks fantastic, they have created a great looking world here with a few diverse locations and a whole host of interesting and weird looking enemies for you to kill. While the game looks awesome, the sound design here deserves some special attention too. You see, this game is fully voice acted, and the stuff between Nor and Enki is so well done, it is honestly movie quality, that is how good it is.
I am more than confident giving Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn such a high score even though the version of the game I played was not yet complete. This is truly awesome stuff and I am so glad that it is coming to Game Pass as in all honesty, if I had not seen it in the coming soon section on Game Pass, I probably would have missed out on this as that was where I learned about it!
Pros:
- We have two fantastic protagonists that the story is based around
- The writing here is great and gets you invested
- The combat and movement feel amazing
- I love the clever way your abilities and weapons progress
Cons:
- I do worry this will be lost in the shuffle
- I hope the ending lives up to the epic start the game has
