Fire Tonight

Fire Tonight is a title that transports us to a simpler time of video games, taking a page from the classic text-based adventures that paved the way for many story-driven titles. Developed by award-winning studio Reptoid Games and published by Way Deep Down, this indie game is set for release on August 12, and has generated a light buzz surrounding its debut on PC and Nintendo Switch.

Simpler Times

Fire Tonight is a unique title since it is entirely based on the song “Fire Tonight” by Information Society. It seems that the game has taken creative liberties to ensure that there is more to the story than what the lyrics denounce, nonetheless mixing art and repurposing it into a new format of consumption is an off-beat idea in the gaming industry. Similar to other titles that rely heavily on their narrative, this is a 2.5D point-and-click game interspaced with puzzle-solving and exploration for advancement.

The game has little to no information available aside from a debut trailer and the occasional news from dev tweets. There isn’t even a press kit at the moment, which makes analyzing the trailer and the lyrics themselves the best chance of understanding the game. That being said what we can infer from the trailer is that the game is set around the mid-’90s from the absence of cellphones and the protagonists shifting between cassettes to find music to listen to. Going back in time is not only an aesthetic choice but clearly a prerequisite to making the game’s main premise believable.

Not Everything is Shakespeare

Fire Tonight tells a simple tale of two people trying to get back into each other arms after a massive fire strikes their city, and chaos ensues. Obviously, this won’t be the greatest tale of all time, and hardly the most poetic, but that is the beauty of minimalist, and intimate stories they are unparalleled and heartfelt tales of people like us. This story unfolds in a time where cellphones and the internet weren’t a reality yet, so a genuine concern for a loved one across the city could force you to go into the frenzy in hopes of finding them in safety.

The two protagonists are Maya and Devin, and each has a different journey in the night we experience. Its beautifully layered narrative takes players through the lyrics that inspired the game, but also the story of the protagonist’s relationship. In this journey, we get to reminisce with them about the past, future, and motives up until now.

Summary

Maya has just arrived in the city, and she hasn’t fully unpacked her life with her family up until meeting Devin. On the other hand, Devin is someone who hasn’t settled down in any city, never feeling like home until he met Maya. Their gameplay is vastly different, with Maya running around the city by car, train, roller skate, or rooftops while avoiding the city’s lockdown, and Devin stays put and takes a trip down memory lane while finding and inspecting all the mementos of their relationship.

Fire Tonight is a simple game, with a heartfelt story of self-discovery, love, and the meaning of home. It repurposes a song to create this narrative and seems like a short and sweet experience. For fans of The Wolf Among Us, Tell Me Why, and Life is Strange, Fire Tonight is apparently an indie stripped-down version of that point-and-click style.

PROS:

  • Beautiful Animations
  • Intimate Story-Telling
  • Laid Back Experience

CONS:

  • Point-and-Click is a Slow Burner
  • Probably a Very Short Game
