Dungeon Munchies turned out to be a real surprise hit for me and a game I got pretty hooked on. This is a fast-paced 2D pixel art adventure that is all about making a cool build and causing mayhem in a dungeon… while eating things! What shocked me the most about this game was that the story was way deeper and more interesting than I thought it was going to be. Plus, while the game may be a tad on the linear side in its progression, it lasts way longer than you would think.
A Tonal Shift In The Dungeon
The story that Dungeon Munchies is telling is one that I enjoyed a great deal. You awaken in a creepy ass underground dungeon and you need to fight your way out. Accompanying you on your journey is the undead Necro-Chef Simmer. The story seems like it is all about being fun and weird at first as you start to make your escape. However, this game has a really epic tonal shift that I did not see coming and I thought it was awesome. Although, I can see the whole “body horror” aspect maybe being a bit much for some.
Food Glorious Food
One of the most interesting aspects about the gameplay of Dungeon Munchies is the way that food dictates the build you have. I have played many games before where food will give you some kind of buff or special ability, but this takes that to a whole new level. You will be actively chasing down creatures and plants to not just kill, but eat. Eating certain combinations of food will give you a different build and experimenting around is fun. Some build seems way overpowered and let you breeze through the game on the hardest difficulty with relative ease if I am being honest, but it is still a really fun game.
Making Use Of What You Have
You cannot eat everything in Dungeon Munchies and the left-over parts that you cannot eat can be used to make your weapons! Finding the best weapons and then pairing them up with your food-based build is very addictive and also a lot of fun. I found myself being willing to try pretty much any kind of combination. The game is a bit linear in its design and I did think there would be more exploration as most of the game is getting told what to do by a cast of fun and strange characters and then doing it.
It Is Adventure Time!
While Dungeon Munchies has some amazing pixel art that is beautifully animated. I have to say that the whole style of the game has a bit of a Cartoon Network, Adventure Time vibe to it all. The sprite work here is fantastic and something I am a massive fan of. Sometimes I would be kind of made when I killed a new enemy so fast as I wanted to check them out more. The game has some very interesting creature designs and there is some more grotesque and horrifying content here than you would think.
I had an absolute blast playing through Dungeon Munchies. I can see myself playing through this time and time again. It is one of those games that is just a ton of fun to fire up and play through. Experimenting with different builds is an awesome time, even if now I am pretty much set in my ways with a super overpowered build. The game has a very cool style about it too and in all, I just really enjoyed my time with the game.
Pros:
- I love the whole wacky style of the game
- The tone of the story turns pretty damn dark!
- The gameplay is so satisfying and so much fun
- There are many different builds to use and experimenting is a lot of fun
Cons:
- The tonal shift the story takes may be a bit much for some
- Some builds may be a bit overpowered
