Oh yeah, baby! Devil May Cry - HD Collectionis BACK and it’s as high-octane as ever, but this time it has newer graphics. Jump into the madness as Danté, resident, employable demon hunter and all-round badass as he shreds up enemies with some incredible gun play and sword fighting. These games are absolutely electric so it’s a lucky thing you get three for the price of one all in blistering 60fps. If you are a longtime fan of the series, or are looking to see what all the fuss is about, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s rock!

Gameplay

As stated in the opener, there are three games in this title: Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition. Each of these games have been digitally remastered which means they have a shiny new 60 frames per second look, but the gameplay itself is retained from the titles original release. This means all the old camera angles, the combat, and the enemies are all there and as janky as they used to be. Now, maybe calling them “janky” is harsh, they were just very ‘of their time.’

The majority of these games are the same as each other, it’s a whole lot of running, exploring, jumping around while hacking up and shooting enemy demons. There is a lot of fun to be had here, the game doesn’t pretend that its not completely about outrageous combat so it measures, not your ability to kill but instead, how awesome you can be while killing. You get rated on your stylishness, something that I find to be incredibly charming and amusing.

As the games progress, they each get a little more fluid and accommodating for the players. Devil May Cry 2 introduces wall running and improved mobility, Devil May Cry 3 introduces the ability to move the camera a little to assist in combat. The more you play, the less you’ll be bothered by the creative choices so don’t fret too much. These games are hack and slash icons, going hand in hand with other titles like Bayonetta, Onimusha: Warlords, and even some more modern games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Art Remaster

The art style has undergone a serious revamp and moved to 60fps, allowing for much smoother and clearer gameplay than ever before. The tough part is the cutscenes between the gameplay as those have remained in their older animation style. That being said, I can’t gripe about it because its such an amazing nostalgia kick. During combat, everything is clear and the action is easy to follow. This helps a lot as, in contrast, the games used to look quite grainy, and the lightshows that kick off every time you or an enemy use a special ability now doesn’t obscure the action anywhere near as much.

Music

The music in this game is astounding. Pulsing, thrashing rock music that keeps you focused and helps to take these battles right to the blades edge. Music plays a way bigger part in games than many would credit, but Capcom knows, Capcom keeps the beats dirty enough to inspire that fast-paced, hard action that keeps us drawn to these games.

*The gameplay is perfect but some updated cutscenes would have helped grease the wheels a lot. If you are looking for an introduction to these classics or are looking to relive the good old days, this is the collection for you. *

Pros:

  • Revamped Visuals
  • Kept everything we loved about the originals

Cons:

  • Also kept things that weren’t great about the originals
  • Cutscenes could have used a bit more love in the remaster
