Bayonetta

Oh, hell yeah, today we are going to be talking about the awesome Bayonetta. To say I love this game is a massive understatement. I have it for the 360, Wii U, Switch, and PS4 and if they release it again on the PS5 I will probably pick it up there too. Hopefully, the big N will eventually get round to releasing the third game in the series. Anyway, let’s go back to where it all started with the very first game.

Just Go With It

I know that some people say that the story of Bayonetta is all over the place and is hard to follow. I would not entirely agree with that, but the story that is being told here does require you to just go with the flow and take what comes. Bayonetta is a witch and she awakens after a very long time. She has no memory, but soon bits of her past come to light.

There are the Umbra Witches of which she is one and these are all about darkness and then there is another set of “beings” called the Lumen Sages. You fight both demons and angels and there is an awesome supporting cast of characters too.

Look At Me

For a game that is over ten years old, I feel that Bayonetta holds up very well. This is a game that is all about style and while she is very hot, the whole game has a really cool and slick style to it all. I love the way there are dark and light style enemies both of which can be pretty grotesque looking. While I do think the game still looks good, a few things here and there are a tad rough around the edges, but to be fair that is to be expected.

The Voice Of An Angel

As well as being a game that is very easy on the eyes, Bayonetta also sounds great. The voice cast here is great, especially Bayonetta herself, but the other characters especially Enzo are a lot of fun too. The game also has a very cool and upbeat soundtrack. What I like about this is that it fits the hack and slash action of the game very well.

Kicking Ass With Style

While I liked the story, the characters, and the presentation it is perhaps the gameplay that is the true winner here. This is kind of like Devil May Cry (no surprise as it was created by one of the founders of that series. Bayonetta can use guns on her feet and her hands and she uses her hair too. She has a lot of moves at her disposal and there is a fun upgrade system too. When you beat a bunch of enemies you are ranked, kind of like in Devil May Cry. She also can transform into things like a panther that lets her run fast and leap far.

I have always found this type of gameplay to be a lot of fun, but I get it is not to everyone’s taste. There are a few quick-time events here too which are probably my least favorite part of the gameplay, to be honest with you.

Pros:

• She is an awesome character
• The gameplay is fast and feels cool
• It has a steady progression/upgrade system
• It has great visuals and sound design

Cons:

• The quick-time events are not all that great
• Some of the visuals are starting to show their age a tad
