Get out your blow dryer and shine up your shoes, in Citizens of Earth, you will join the clueless (but with great hair) Vice President of the Earth to help solve the world’s problems. There’s no shortage of them.
In a hilarious twist that greatly resembles real life, the Vice President refuses to actually do anything himself—instead he relies on a whole host of other characters to do his work for him. Similar to Pokemon, you’ll have to train up these characters so they can be more useful to you.
You’ll have to convince them to join your side by meeting their requirements, which are as varied as the characters themselves. Each character is useful in its own way, such as a mom that heals by doling out hugs, or a police officer who is good at handling bad guys.
The game is in homage to the Japanese RPG EarthBound, and has a number of striking similarities.
The entire story line is fun, silly, and full of parody. After winning the election to become Vice President (VP for short) you return to your hometown to recover. Instead, you discover a plot that could destroy the entire human race! It’s up to you to solve it. The result is a mad dash for characters, battles, and scenes filled with goofy humor. The quests are varied, running from racing a car salesman to helping the school mascot recover his school spirit. The result is hours of entertainment without it feeling like a grind.
Some problems with game mechanics
One problem with the game is that the battles are far too frequent. While this is probably an homage to retro RPGs such as Earthbound, they happen too frequently even compared to these RPGS. The game does break from other traditional RPGs in the fact that you can see all of the enemies and have a better chance of avoiding them, but some areas are simply so stuffed with enemies you have no choice but to battle every step of the way. The good news is battles are usually quick.
The maps are also very vague, and so are the hints. The player can dump a lot of time into trying to use a hint, only to discover the entrance to a building was actually one area over to where the hint claims.
This is an entertaining game whose light spirit makes for a fun time. The game however, could do more with the parody. While the game is obviously supposed to show real life parody of politicians, it could have done better by being a little clearer.
The game is somewhat vague and could use being sharpened up a little bit. This combined with the constant battles and other minor issues with game play detracts somewhat from the game itself. While these are annoyances, it’s still a fun game and makes for good entertainment.
