The 'Tales' series has produced some pretty outstanding games since 1996. Many take on the perspective that it has made the JRPG more accessible, explaining why the games continue to find releases in the west. Still, to this day, the story arcs continue to confuse and provide more questions than answered - at least for myself anyway. There must be a reason why Tales of Xillia is being lauded in its home country, however.
Apart from the nonsensical names of these offerings - often you will find well-crafted gameplay. They combine a fascinating narrative, intriguing world design, and engaging combat, all wrapped in a neat little package. Tales of Xillia seems to offer those exact same values. It veers away from the grind in favor of a balance that appeals to a broader audience.
The What Battle System?
Tales of Xillia continues where other 'Tales' games left off in terms of a lore-ridden narrative in a high fantasy setting. It's paired with a combat system used in the more recent games of the series. This particular story involves two characters, Mathis and Maxwell, undertaking the challenge of dispelling some sort of magical barrier from their land. They have been brought in by some evil entity - you know, typical JRPG stuff.
Both characters are playable, differing from previous games. Interactions and stories can slightly change depending on who you are playing. There is a lot of work into the lore, character design, and spin-off narratives to this game - it presents as a very fleshed-out world, which is likely why it is so immersive. The world is diverse in the environment and looks beautiful, providing an excellent backdrop for the high octane combat system. That is one of the most celebrated game elements in not being too complicated but definitely challenging. It's the kind of battle where you won't find yourself overly frustrated or need to grind for hours just to get to where you need to be. What drives me nuts about these things is the names they give their battle systems as if it's a revolutionary and unique mechanic. The named 'Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System' - is not that much different from the 'Active Cross Battle System' found in Final Fantasy XV. They are both real-time battle mechanics tailored to JRPG's that is all.
Tales of Xillia is, without a doubt, a highly recommendable JRPG. The balance of all the gameplay elements comes off in a superior fashion to some of its counterparts. The story flows, travel systems are functional, the world feels alive, and there is a lot to do. Every element works with each other in a synchronized manner and feeds into the core combat - the feel is simply excellent.
That's not to say that Tales of Xillia doesn't come without some downsides, though. The story still doesn't make sense (at least to me, I might just be slow). Outside of a personal perspective - a let down is the lack of a world map to really open up the environments. The game can often feel linear because of this very reason. Voice acting also leaves a lot to be desired, with some downright cringing moments in character exchanges.
Tales of Xillia, though, is an excellent JRPG. Its shortcomings are countered by the hours of entertainment you can pull from the main story, side quests, combat, and NPC interactions. Not to mention its value in replayability. It falls lower of people a masterpiece like Xenoblade Chronicles, but no question that this is an admirable entry into the Tales series.
