Ever since the late nineties, the popular card game and Anime series Yu-Gi-Oh has been subject to a wide variety of video game tie ins. The series has spanned across almost every platform that you can name from 1997 until the present day and each has had its own unique take on the series. Yu-Gi-Oh Capsule Monster Coliseum is no different in this respect as it takes the usual cast of characters, a familiar gameplay style and tweaks ever slightly to give a fresh new feel to the franchise.

This game will have a recognisable gameplay style to that of most licenced Yu-Gi-Oh games like Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories or even the mobile title Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Links. Though, the game most closely resembles fellow PS2 title Yu Gi Oh The Duelists Of The Roses. The key difference is that this title introduces a focus on the terrain in which the match takes place on and various mechanics around the concept of monster capsules.

Turn Based Strategy

This game changes the usual format up quite considerably in terms of the core gameplay. What you’ll immediately feel as you enter your first duel, is that proceedings will feel more like a turn-based strategy game. You will have a certain amount of action points in order to summon monsters to the battlefield, the attributes of these monsters will play out like a rock, paper, scissors outcome based on the effect of the monster. Plus you’ll have a set amount of action points to carry out your tactics with.

The game suddenly feels like a Yu-Gi-Oh branded version of Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger or X-Com in the way it plays, only combined with table top chess. It’s a weird approach for sure but it does have a certain level of charm that can’t be ignored. However, it does feel like it oversteps the great gameplay decisions of Duellists of the Roses which seemed to nail this balance perfectly.

The monsters have attack and defence but also health points too. So to kill a monster, you have to subtract the defence points from your attack points and this amount is taken from the monsters HP. Whilst in conventional duels, if attack beats defence then it’s gone immediately. This mechanic lengthens games considerably but not for the better and can lead to boring stretches of gameplay.

This is offset slightly by the EXP system that allows monsters to grow in level as the match progresses and even evolve into more capable beasts. Although, it just seems so far removed from what the franchise’s gameplay should be. It’s an admirable attempt at something new but there is nothing that isn’t quite right about it.

Serviceable Visuals

The game doesn’t blow anyone away with its graphical detail. In fact, the art style is grainy in areas and feel rather far removed from the Yu-Gi-Oh art style in a lot of places. The chess piece renditions of the monsters are an interesting addition and are fun to see but aside from this, it seems like a lower quality version of Duellists of the Roses once again, which used genuine monster models and looked fantastic.

The one saving grace visually are the storyboards and UI which feels much more familiar in its presentation. The character models are well presented and the narrative, although not riveting due to a weak plot, is at least well written.

Yu-Gi-Oh-No

While this game does have an interesting concept and aims to use Duellists of the Roses as a springboard to success, it ends up looking like a tired rehash of what is already on the market. The art style is fine but isn’t quintessentially Yu-Gi-Oh by any stretch of the imagination. The narrative is poor to say the least.

4.5

The gameplay is overcomplicated and far removed from what makes the actual card game fun in the first place and overall, its a Yu-Gi-Oh title that serves as a black mark in an otherwise great library of licenced titles for the series.

Pros

  • Interesting concept
  • Exp system is a fun touch
  • Turn-based strategy fans might enjoy this one.

Cons

  • Is basically a lesser version of Duellists of the Roses
  • The art style is mediocre.
  • The storyline is weak
