Wii Sports Resort

If you’re curious about the motion sensing technology available for the Wii platform, Wii Sports Resort is a game designed specifically for showing it off. Rather than a full, complex game, this is a demo game that shows off the capabilities of the platform, while keeping it simple for the average player.

The game features about a dozen different sports, many of which are old favorites from the original Wii Sports dressed up with the Wii Motion Plus technology.

Varying level of fun

The new game is set on Wuhu Island, an expansive resort filled with sports and fun things to do. Among the many games available include canoeing, cycling, swordplay, and basketball. A few of the games are absolutely terrible to play, while others can easily carry the whole game. This is to be expected in a sports game with a wide variety of sports, because developers simply can’t put all of their manpower into making each game perfect.

Swordplay is easily the best game, with some degree of strategy needed. Some players in the past have complained that simply wiggling the remote is enough to win, but this isn’t actually the case.

In Swordplay, your goal is to knock the opponent off their platform into the water. Getting another player on the defensive opens them up for attack, and learning to play defensively yourself can help aid you in winning. Despite being simple enough that a casual player can enjoy it, there are layers of complexity for more hardcore people to enjoy.

Easily the worst of the games available is boxing. Many of the problems related to the Wii Motion Plus technology surfaces with boxing, and you’ll find yourself recalibrating the controls regularly to try and get through the game.

Not playable without Wii Motion Plus

Wii Sports Resort was specifically designed to showcase the Wii Motion Plus technology. If you don’t have the new sensor that goes with it, you can’t play any of the games on it. If you purchased this thinking it was just a new update to Wii Sports, you’ll be disappointed.

If you do have the new technology however, this is worth buying even if you’ve already played Wii Sports. The game is a true upgrade to the original, with more games, more effort put into development, and an even better overall experience. If you liked Wii Sports and are looking to try something new, this is certainly worth picking up and giving a try.
