Based on the Classic World of Darkness series of tabletop RPGs, Werewolf: The Apocalypse is a third person action game that has the player going wolf as Cahal, a werewolf who is tasked at taking down an evil corporation. Fans of games like Devil May Cry and Vampyr will find a lot to enjoy, as will fans of the Vampire: The Masquerade series, as they are set in the same universe.

A Story With More Bark Than Bite

The story in Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is a little bit messy. Developers Cyanide Studio clearly have a lot of affinity for the World of Darkness lore, but do very little to welcome newcomers to its strange blend of modern tech and supernatural folk tales. New players will find themselves unsure of certain characters’ motivations, story events and world building because the game simply does very little to explain itself.

That said, the world is interesting enough, but players can expect a lot of unexplained contrasts between the game’s futuristic side and it's more werewolf side.

This Is Lycanthropy

Of course, players diving into Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood will want to experience everything about becoming a powerful, ravenous werewolf. Strangely, the game doesn’t put all of its emphasis in this area. Instead, the game offers players both the option to stealth their way through levels or to smash everything in their path. While the option is commendable in theory, it seems to make little sense why players would want to avoid heading into beast mode to lay waste to their enemies.

The stealth sections do add some extra mechanics such as turning into a regular wolf to avoid enemy line of sight, as well as hacking into camera systems for extra cover, but these mechanics feel like parts of games from 2 generations ago, not from a game being released on the PS5 and XBOX Series X.

The werewolf form is clearly the best part of the game, and the combat works by giving players a mixture of light and heavy attacks that each have their pros and cons. This allows players to mix up their attacks mid battle, which gives the game a bit of complexity compared to your average button masher.

Missing Polish

Players shouldn’t expect a big budget adventure with Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood. It’s obvious that the game is a mid-tier project, but the graphics, stiff voice acting and animations do little to try and earn itself any higher praise.

Lots of assets are reused throughout the game, with lots of areas (apart from the main cast’s homebase) looking exactly the same with repeating textures and bland, vaguely tech-focused designs.

This lack of variation also spills out into the games missions, which usually boil down to a handful of scenarios. Players will be tasked with getting secret information, tracking down certain people or taking out generators.

But despite the different objectives, all of these missions play out the same, with players simply skulking from room to room either avoiding or heading straight into the game’s somewhat clunky combat.

7

Unfortunately, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood suffers from a clear lack of budget. There are signs of something greater amidst all the fur and guts, but the final product shows more similarities with games from 15 years ago than it does with games from 2021.
