Warpips

The first time I saw Warpips in action I was very excited. The reason for this is that a certain series of games that were big on the Game Boy Advance came to mind. Truth be told, this is not exactly like that, but if you are looking for some fast-paced and action-heavy sim-style war, you can do a hell of a lot worse than this as what we have here is sure to be one of the hidden gems of 2021.

Two Tribes Go To War

The premise of the game is quite simple, you are in charge of one army and you want to vanquish the other one in as massive an explosion as possible. If you are looking for a Call of Duty style campaign story, you have come to the wrong place. Instead of having a big narrative, Warpips is more about the action and the fun and that is certainly something I am cool with.

I love the art style that they went for with this game. It just has a ton of charm to it and it reminded me of when I would play in the sandbox with my GI Joe, MASK, and Transformers toys, all be it without the huge explosions and death of course!

This War Could Be Advanced!

The game I was talking about in the intro was Advanced Wars. I do feel that there are slight similarities with what is being offered here. You need to protect yours on one side of the screen, while making your way to the enemies’ side to blow up there’s. It is a “tug-of-war” gameplay system that is just so very addictive. What I like about this is that the game is very accessible. Far too many war games have a massive barrier of entry due to being so complex. I love how Warpips manages to be deep, but not at the expense of having fun.

The Calm Before The Storm!

You have a variety of different units at your disposal. You have to decide what kind of units you are going to deploy into battle. Tanks, choppers, dudes with guns, and so on are all at your fingertips. You get the balance just right and you could very well steamroll over the enemy. You make a wrong calculation and you will pay for it dearly.

There is no micromanaging in Warpips to worry about, you just want to keep the focus on the fight in front of you. You do have to research so that you can get access to new stuff, but this is not as brutal as you would think. There is an upgrade tree that has a lot going on so you do feel like you are always working towards something. So far, I am not sure if there is going to be a big single-player campaign, but I do know the battles are randomized so this will help with the replay value.

I will be honest and say that I do feel Warpips is the kind of game that is not going to be for everyone. However, it is a war game that has a lot of charm. The fact it is easy to get into, but very hard to master and become good at will make those who do get into it, want to stick with it so they can be the ultimate commander!

Pros:

  • The visuals have a kind of “toybox” vibe going on
  • It is cool how you can come up with various strategies
  • There is a lot of depth to the gameplay, but it is still very accessible
  • The battles are always randomized

Cons:

  • No word on any multiplayer update
  • It is lacking in the story department
