If you are having a hard time remembering Volfied do not feel bad. This is a classic arcade game, but when it was released in the West on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive it was renamed for some reason to Ultimate Qix. This is a sequel to the massive hit that was Qix and it is a fantastic and somewhat forgotten game on the Genesis.

I Will Save My People

One of the strangest things about this game is that it does actually have a story. Which for the time the game was released is pretty impressive. You play as a space pilot who is returning to your home planet only to discover that it has been overrun by aliens and now you and your trusty spaceship need to destroy them and save the day.

Qix, But With A Sci-Fi Twist

The gameplay of Volfied is pretty much exactly what Qix offered. Each level is its own thing and you pilot this little spaceship around the outside of the screen. When you hold one of the buttons, you can then move into the screen and when you touch another side part of the screen will change to reveal what is underneath. It is the kind of thing that sounds very easy, but it is very challenging. If you get hit as you are making a new part of the screen change you die.

The game has these aliens and spacecrafts floating around that are trying to stop you so in most cases it is best to make a small part of the screen appear at a time rather than going for a giant bit. The gameplay is very simple, but it is also very addictive.

They Want You Dead!

I said how Volfied has aliens and spacecraft trying to stop you, but depending on the difficulty you are playing the game on, you may have other things to worry about too! There is a timer and depending on the difficulty level a different alien will come after you making the stage even harder if you have not completed it in time. This adds to the tension as you want to take your time, but you really cannot!

Sci-Fi Goodness

The game for what it is looks fantastic. I love the different ship and alien designs and as you reveal an image it always looks different and is of a very high quality. The ship you pilot is tiny and not very impressive, but I get why they made this choice.

The soundtrack is the real downside to this game as it gets very annoying very quickly. I feel that it should have had a more pumping kind of soundtrack.

In playing Volfied or if you prefer, Ultimate Qix again for the first time in quite a while, I must say that it holds up very well. This is one of the best takes on the Qix formula for me and I think the added sci-fi twist really does a great job in making the game more fun and compelling to play. Many people overlook this one, but it is a solid part of the Genesis/Mega Drive game library.

  • It is challenging and fun
  • I enjoyed the sci-fi setting
  • The game looks great, especially the enemies
  • It is easy to play, but hard to master
  • Close to 20 levels to beat

  • The soundtrack is horrible
  • They could have done a tad more detail on your ship
