Card games are something that has the potential to make any group of gamers let out a collective groan. Often these are formulaic games with tired ideas, or on the flipside, overcomplicated games which ask a lot of the player and take themselves to seriously. There isn’t really an in-between. However, what if there was a card game which didn’t ask you to battle with your cards, but instead, used the cards to tell a story. Almost like a visual novel or an interactive tarot reading. Well, it seems like it’s on the way and the game is called Voice The Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars.

This game is set to play like titles such as What Remains of Edith Finch and Life is Strange in terms of narrative focus but also somewhat like Slay The Spire, Loop Hero and Tainted Grail. This title is set to be a shakeup in the card-based gaming genre. However, is this game worth the hype? We find out in our review of Voice The Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars.

Play Your Cards Right

Firstly, lets talk about the visuals on display here. Thanks to the medieval fantasy setting filled with dragons and warriors, this game looks and feels like a DnD tabletop game. The visuals are all hand-drawn, the colours are vibrant and every character, asset and card feels like it has been created by the fictitious rogues themselves. This is to be expected from a developer such as Square Enix but even still, it’s to be praised.

Then as for gameplay, this game will allow you to explore a tabletop map that is made entirely from cards. You are in charge of every choice that you make and every choice will determine your fate. It’s a title that plays very similarly to a turn-based strategy game, an adventure game, a tabletop board game and a text-based adventure, all married together to create this unique card-based game.

Now, it is also worth noting that there is some battling within this title. Players will have to use strategy in a game not unlike Gwent to overcome certain obstacles. However, this is a means to an end and doesn’t dominate proceedings too much. Allowing you to focus on the main dynamic of this game, the narrative.

The Verdict

Overall, it’s clear that this game has some promise. The title has a unique story-based approach and offers a surprising amount of gameplay variety. You can explore, strategize, gather fun, useful items and of course, battle to get to the end of this wonderful story.

Plus, this game looks absolutely fantastic too. We aren’t too sure if this one will live up to expectations as it’s a big swing. However, with Square Enix at the wheel, this game has a chance of being a smash hit from out of nowhere. We suppose only time will tell.

Pros

  • Awesome medieval fantasy visuals
  • A unique approach to card-based gaming
  • Branching narrative

Cons

  • Combat gets in the way of narrative and exploration
