Urban Freestyle Soccer

Although a lot of sports titles are great on their own, they all seem to leave their players wanting a little bit more here and there. There’s a reason why there’s such a stark difference in the type of hype surrounding ‘realistic’ sports games and ‘ridiculous’ ones. The fun of video games as a form of media is that it doesn’t all have to be anchored to realism (as with any medium, really) and creators can take a great leap of faith when developing a game. For Urban Freestyle Soccer, I was really looking forward to see what could be done with a more imaginative take on soccer. To my disappointment, the thought was there but the execution and actual gameplay lagged a bit behind. Its not an impossible game to enjoy – it just has a few too many kinks to make it a wholly enjoyable and recommendable experience.

Some Risks

Easily the best part about this game is that every character controls as you’d expect. Given that you’re now in control of one of the hood’s main soccer gangs, this makes a lot of sense. The world of street soccer is a lot more fastpaced, dangerous, and creative. At least, its creative in theory. As you’re running around the field, you’ll begin to notice that you, as the player, have a very minor role in the actual gameplay portion of this game. You’ll want to do all these crazy tricks and pull off unique combos to score goals, which sounds great.

The unfortunate part is that your player will do most of the actual work. All you’ve got to do is hold down the L1 button, press one of the primary buttons, and relax. On the surface, all these elements combine to make a game that’s incredibly easy to pick up and play even if you’ve never touched a controller in your life. In that respect, its enjoyable, but it does mean that there’s essentially little to no challenge, nor any real fun as you’re moving around the field.

A Few Good Things

I think that Netbusters were a neat idea, being basically a guaranteed goal like that seen in Mario Strikers or Mario Strikers Charged, but they were hardly enough to stave off the monotony of the rest of the game. Given that you could score over 10 goals with minimal effort, there really was no power behind them. At least in Mario Strikers on Professional difficulty you weren’t just given the option to do these whenever you wanted – you had to earn that free goal, which was accompanied by a cool cutscene. This really plays back to how simple the game is.

Bottom Line

Being so easy, Urban Freestyle Soccer was incredibly set on getting onto the wave created by the NBA Street series of making a ‘layman’s’ soccer game. Again, the overall idea was there, which really shines when you’re playing with a couple of your friends. It just greatly suffered from trying to rope in anyone without having an identity of its own.

5

A lack of defining features, along with lackluster gameplay that was mindlessly easy, unintuitive, and simple, makes Urban Freestyle Soccer a title you could skip. Although I liked the motion of the players and gameplay with friends, it is ultimately nothing worth noting.

Pros:

  • Good controls
  • Unique look/design

Cons:

  • Painfully simple
  • Minimal distinctive/fun features
  • Lacks polish in menus/overall look
