Get out your bicycles and get ready for the race of the century. Tour de France 2023 puts you on the bicycles of some of the most famous athletes in the world. The game is part of one of the best cycling simulator series in the world, so it has a lot to live up to.

Rider ability plays an important part in successfully completing the game. Developer Cyanide has paid close attention to the relative fitness of all the people competing in the Tour de France and has given each character in the game similar fitness levels.

While you can choose who you play, you’ll need strategy to get through the game. Players need to conserve energy for the most important parts of the game, as there are limits to endurance, and also how much energy you can restore throughout the game. There are only a few food pickup spots that will restore small amounts of energy.

Players can help conserve energy through slipstreams and make the most of downhill slopes. Besides this, keeping your balance through the peloton, the final part of the game, is also important.

Too Similar To Past Games

One of the biggest complaints players note is that while there are a few small differences to the game, it’s largely the same as Tour de France 2022. Also 2021 and 2020. Since the game is more about continuing the story and adding features, there’s bound to be a lot of repeats in the game.

Cyanide has responded personally to many of these complaints, citing that they feel there are enough new additions to call it a new game.

Crashes are Disappointing

Crashes are an exciting part of Tour de France, but in Tour de France 2023, they are underwhelming. If someone hits another bicycle, at most the player stops and then falls over. In reality, even the slightest bump to another bicycle in a crowd of riders can result in catastrophic and rather showy falls.

When compared to the real life excitement of falls, Tour de France 2023 doesn’t make a good showing.

Interesting Downhill Dynamic

Despite being very similar to Tour de France 2022, the game does introduce a novel concept. The game now offers a downhill mode, which analyzes the choices you make on some of the toughest downhill stretches, and gives you a comparison on how you do to real athletes who compete in the Tour de France.

If you’ve played any of the other Tour de France games, you can safely skip this one. Although it does offer a new feature or two, it is largely the same as all the other games in the series. If you’ve never played a Tour de France game and want to get into it, this game may be worth it. It does offer some of the best cycling simulations out there, and can be mildly entertaining to play.
