Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Montana's Movie Madness

Breaking into show business is tough, a lesson Buster Bunny's about to learn - the hard way. Montana Max has sabotaged the Toon-sters' fave films, and Buster's only chance to restore these movie masterpieces is to take a starring role in the flicks. Unfortunately, he's only got two continues to leave Monty on the cutting-room floor in this solid action game.

Tooned In

Monty's diced and spliced his way into a heroic role in five movies, with Buster depicted as the bad guy. An contraire! With Cogo Dodo's help, Buster is blasted into each movie in sequence: The Lone Rabbit (a Western), Kung Fu Yung (a samurai showdown), Maxinator (a sci-fi shooter), Curse of the Bunny's Tomb (a horror flick), and Director Max and his Freeze-Flash Camera (the final battle).

Although the game play is nothing special, Konami did a superb job of incorporating the Tiny Toons theme and characters. You'll meet the whole cast in cinematic cut-scenes between the movies. Buster's friends also help (or hinder) him in various bonus rounds. The dialogue is well written, and the movie theme seems like it's lifted from the plot of a weekday afternoon's Toons episode.

Tiny Toons 2's graphics are toon-riffic. The characters look like their animated selves, and their facial expressions are cute. The backgrounds aren't overly detailed, but that's OK.

If you can't already recite the Tiny Toons theme song by heart, you'll be able to hum it backward and forward after playing this game. The theme's used over and over in every conceivable fashion to reflect each stage's motif. Despite it's repetition, the music's crisp and probably won't grate on your nerves if you're a big Toons fan.

This Game Makes You Very Hoppy

Buster maneuvers through the traditional enemy-stomping thrills and platform-jumping spills. The cart really puts your reflexes to the test, and the game's based on the concept of making or missing tough jumps. Anyone can pick up the game play. However, the controls need more fine-toon-ing. Buster's new dash-and-jump commands are often needed for trickier segments, but they're unreliable and hard to master.

This cart would have been a perfect buy for all Toonsters, but the challenge is on the hard side. You only get two continues, which run out all too fast.

Touch that Dial?

TT 2 is worth a play-see, but younger players will become frustrated with the lack of con tinues. Movie Madness opens to mixed reviews.

ProTips:

  • See the Rock? See the Safety Zone? NOW would be an appropriate time to press the Jump button. Very good, boys and girls.
  • You can tell which Lanterns will fall by the shape of their marking. Kick dangerous Lanterns away or bounce on them in sequence.
  • Babs awards an extra health point in Gogo Dodo's subgame. Stop the cursor as it passes over Shirley's face.
  • Kicks stun most enemies, but they kill the Condors.

Game Reviews

Here's another Game Boy action/adventu re cart from those loony Tiny Toons kids. This time, Montana has made four movies that make Buster look bad. You play the embarrassed Buster in this side-view, side-scrolling adventure cart. You jump into the movies to change the plots of all four flicks, making yourself look good in the process.
