The Lightbringer

The Lightbringer is one of those games that as soon as I saw the first trailer, I knew that this was a game for me. It is an adventure game with puzzle solving, platforming, exploration, and just a little bit of combat sprinkled on top for good measure. In many ways, it feels like a classic kind of game, but that gorgeous artwork makes you feel like you are playing through some kind of adventure from a storybook.

Succeed Where Your Sister Failed

The story of The Lightbringer is one that I think is not just interesting, but told very well. We play as this young hero who lives in a land that is being overrun and taken over by this evil and vile corruption.

Our hero’s sister tried to stop this herself, but she ultimately fell! Now with her spirit to guide you, you must go and cleanse the monoliths that bring light to the land and that are under attack by this corruption. The story is narrated by the spirit of your sister and it is a very interesting way to move the story forward.

Mini Worlds!

Each area of the game feels like its own little contained world. You will have to explore, find the monolith, cleanse it and then move on to the next area. Each area will have you needing to solve some puzzles, explore to find items, and also deal with a little bit of combat here and there too. There is also some platforming that you have to do as well. Each area of the game to me felt like a dungeon/area from a classic Legend of Zelda game which is kind of neat as the developer said that the older Zelda games were a big inspiration for The Lightbringer.

You Spin Me Round!

The way the game is presented is very interesting. At a glance, it looks like it is some kind of top down isometric kind of game which is a style that many games trying to be a classic adventure or Zelda style game go for. The big difference here is that you can move the camera around! I cannot think of many other games that have this viewpoint that give you so much control over the camera. The thing is, this is actually used in gameplay.

Sometimes you have to move the camera to make a jump easier. Other times, moving the camera will reveal something that otherwise would have been hidden. A camera that can be moved in an isometric game was something I never knew I wanted until I played this.

I really, really like what they have done with The Lightbringer. This is a very nice and fun game to play through and I like that they were inspired by the classic Legend of Zelda games, but at the same time, they have more than enough of their own ideas here to make this a rather unique kind of experience. This is one of those games that once I started playing it, I wanted to keep on going as it was just so much fun to play.

Pros:

  • I really liked the way the game presented the story
  • The bits of platforming that you have to do feel great
  • It has some tricky puzzles, but not so tricky they become frustrating
  • The way you can move the camera is clever

Cons:

  • I think just a tad more combat would have been nice
  • It sounds crazy, but moving the camera did feel unnatural in this style of game at first!
