Today, we are looking at a very adult visual novel called The Kid at the Back. I had been paying close attention to this for a while, as the game has a very dark and disturbing vibe about it. It is the kind of game that is not for those with a weak stomach or who do not like clearly damaged characters. I found the whole thing to be very engaging, and I am very excited for the developer to add more content to the game, as what is here in the build that I played is very engrossing.
A Loner In Black
I need to be very careful about what I say in regards to the plot of The Kid at the Back, as this is a very story-driven game, and the story is fantastic, with many twists and turns. We get to name our MC and decide what their pronouns are. Our MC is a mysterious person; he often goes unnoticed, but those who lock eyes with him feel some kind of deep connection, and there is more to this guy and their past than you may realize. There is a lot of dark and twisted stuff in the story, we are talking abuse, murder, assault, and pretty much everything in between, so be sure to double check if you can handle this before jumping in.
Two Become One
As I write this, The Kid at the Back is not yet fully complete. There are two love interests in Crowe and Sol, and they both offer a very different experience and relationship for our main character. There are many other characters that you can meet and interact with, but from what I have seen, more love interests are to come. However, I am not sure if the love interests will be any of the other characters that are in the game so far. The writing is very well done, and it keeps you on edge and wondering if there is something supernatural or otherworldly going on here.
Emo To The Max
Yeah, I said that! The Kid at the Back has a very emo kind of look to it, and that is not meant as a kind of disrespect. The main character has that emo style down to a T, and the whole game has a very moody kind of look to it. However, despite there being many dark and twisted elements to the story. This game is brought to life with some very stylish visuals that are bright and clear. Well, I say bright, there is some pretty dark stuff happening here in terms of violence and even the sexual content as well. It is certainly the kind of game that is made for a specific audience, but those who do like darker and more “emo” kinds of stories will appreciate this.
Making The Right Decisions
With The Kid at the Back being an adult visual novel, you probably do not need me to tell you what the deal with the gameplay is. This is mostly a case of reading and following the story, but you do have to make several choices during the game. What I liked about the choices was that you never know for sure the first time you play the game if a choice is just some throwaway thing or if it will have major consequences as you progress through the game. As of me writing this, a play through is around an hour long, two if you want to experience both love interests.
I thought that The Kid at the Back was a fantastic adult visual novel. I pretty much knew from the title screen that the chances this game was going to click with me were very high. I love dark and twisted stuff like this, and while it is certainly not for those who tend to shy away from darker and more violent and messed up stories. For you guys, who get a kick out of this kind of thing. I am pretty certain you will find this a very memorable experience.
Pros:
- I liked how connected to the MC you feel
- The art in the game is very dark, but so well done!
- This is a game that is great if you love a more twisted and haunting story
- The developer has a lot more content planned, and I am excited for it
Cons:
- The game may be too dark and twisted for some people
- As of writing, no word on when the next big content update will be
