Harness the wind and sour through the wilderness of Stonefly. That’s what it says to do so that’s what we are going to try and do in this story about legacy, belonging and self-discovery. If you are looking for a unique game that really pushes limits and tries some new things then you are going to adore this title. Stonefly will have you engaged form start to finish in this unique title set in a world somewhat familiar but starkly different than any you know. Let’s buckle up and get into it.
Gameplay
This game focuses primarily on exploration and combat. Much like Creature in the Well or Evergate or any number of adventure games. Players take control of Annika, a naïve inventor, who has lost her family heirloom to thieves. This heirloom happens to be a massive bug stomping mech that is used to harvest and collect materials. Combat is simple and straightforward as you fly around the screen and destroy little bug enemies with your arsenal of weapons as you pilot a different, older mech.
Besides fighting enemies and exploring, you can also collect materials and purchase ammo or upgrade. The game really doesn’t hold your hand in either of these situations so it’s up to you to figure out how to collect things and what they are for. I appreciated this laid-back attitude; it really helps sell the feeling that this game is all about. It has an incredible mix of cozy gameplay and tranquil action. Glide through the canopies of this strange world that makes you feel very small yet powerful. The mech will take a little getting used to, I’ll let you know that now. It’s heavy and clunky, but after a while, you’ll be gliding round like a pro.
Story
The story is as described, you must hunt down and locate the family heirloom that got stolen. You have to make your way through a bizarre world filled with hungry bugs, adventure and memorable characters. The story was pleasantly heartwarming and it really gives players a sense of family and belonging, something that is not easily captured in a game.
Aesthetics and Music
The art style of this game is really special and something I do not get tired of looking at. All the characters are well designed with this ‘oil painting’ look that I’ve never seen before in a game. Everything looks as though it was hand crafted for this mid-century modern design. This gorgeous aesthetic mixed with the beautiful music provide a unique and warm feeling that is hard to recreate. It has good vibes; you know what I mean?
This game is a fantastic jaunt through a bizarre but familiar world. The music is awesome and the combat is easy to grasp. A fun little game that lets you wreck some creepy crawlies in a bug mech, what more could you want?
Pros:
- Excellent Vibes
- Fantastic art direction
- Excellent Story
- Loveable characters
- Brilliant Soundtrack
Cons:
- Combat can get a little repetitive after a while
- If you love cozy games, it works. If you don’t, it can appear quite boring and tedious.
