As a massive fan of the franchise, I am always excited when something like Star Wars Outlaws is announced. This is a game that has had a bit of mixed reception since it was shown, but I think there is a lot of promise here and there is a part of me that thinks this could be a fantastic Star Wars game. Still, I wanted to talk about what we know so far about the game and try to get people thinking a bit more positively about this game.
Ubisoft Are No Strangers To The Force!
One of the strangest criticisms I have come across about Star Wars Outlaws is how it is weird that Ubisoft is making a Star Wars game. Or that this is just Star Wars Far Cry, I am pretty sure people were saying the same thing about Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, some people like to just hate on Ubisoft! Anyway, Ubisoft has worked with the Star Wars license before so this is not all that unusual. In some regions, they published the Game Boy versions of the original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back games. Plus, they developed and published the Star Wars Trilogy Game for the Game Boy Advance which is a real hidden gem.
The Perfect Setting
The setting for Star Wars Outlaws is the period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As those are my two favorite Star Wars movies, the setting could not be any more appealing for me. The Empire well and truly has a grip on the galaxy and it is a time where crime lords and syndicates can thrive. Our main character is a feisty “scoundrel” called Kay Vess who is joined by her little critter buddy Nix and they are part of the biggest heist the galaxy has ever seen. Which in typical Star Wars fashion does not go to plan and sees her having to deal with some of the worst and best that the galaxy has to offer. From a story point of view, I think that this looks fantastic and I am very excited to see how it goes.
Now This Is A Galaxy
What is very unique about Star Wars Outlaws is that while we have had a ton of Star Wars games over the last few decades and some have been huge such as the recent Star Wars Jedi Survivor. This is the first actual open world Star Wars game, we get to travel anywhere we want and there are numerous planets, some that will seem familiar as well as some that have been made just for the game. It is a 3rd person action and adventure game with lots of exciting shootouts. There are vehicle sections, space combat, and even some light puzzle solving. I like the way that you can use Nix to help you out and it seems like there is a fun and interesting progression system that rewards you as you play.
Let Me Play The Game
Now, I know I said that people hate on Ubisoft and I will admit, I am a bit of a Ubisoft shill as I love most of their big franchises. However, Star Wars Outlaws for as much as I am excited to play it, does have some questionable things. The whole Jabba the Hut being tied to a side mission DLC that you had to pay for, which they have kind of rectified as well as the season pass, different versions, and so on does put a sour taste in people's mouths. To be honest with you, I would never disagree with someone who says that they hate these practices as even as a fan, it can be so frustrating how they have all this nickel and diming DLC.
Even with the negativity that is surrounding Star Wars Outlaws, this is a game I am very excited for. It looks like it is going to be a ton of fun to play and I am very interested to see what the story here is going to be, especially what iconic Star Wars characters will show up. If you like the look of the game but do not want to support Ubisoft or want to pay full price. One the things about Ubisoft games is that they tend to drop in price pretty quickly after release, come Black Friday, this will be a game that I would wager many places will have on offer.
Pros:
- I love the setting of the game
- The newly created character seems really cool
- This is an open world Star Wars game and that is such a great concept
- It seems like there is a lot of variety to the gameplay
Cons:
- This does have most of the questionable things a typical Ubisoft game has
- Will you need to pay for the DLC to get the full experience?
