Puzzle Quest 3

Puzzle Quest 3 is the latest installment that you could argue spawned the whole match three craze that boomed in the mid to late 00s! It is kind of crazy to think that the original game in this series was released all the way back in 2007, even my mother played that and she is not even into games! Anyway, while this latest game is keeping things similar to a degree, it also features some massive changes that really do shake things up. Of course, it has your usual free to play trappings, but if you have played the previous games in the series then you know to expect that.

The Five Classes Of Might And Magic

I do have to say I like the fantasy setting of Puzzle Quest 3, but I have pretty much zero interest in any story that the game is trying to tell. Still, for fans of fantasy settings, it is going to be fun. The game features five different classes for you to play as which are Paladin, Necromancer, Shaman, Bezerker, and Assassin. Each class has their own special abilities that they can use on a board so it can be fun to play around and see which one suits your playstyle the best.

Match Three To Attack

Puzzle Quest 3 at first glance looks like it is keeping things the same as they have always been. You have an enemy that you need to fight and you deal damage by matching three items of the same type. However, the first thing to note is that the enemy no longer matches three things, they just attack! For example, a goblin can take away two random items from the game board on each turn which can really throw things on their head. I liked this as it adds more personality to each enemy you fight.

Time Is Power

Now, I did say that this is still a match three game, but Puzzle Quest 3 has a very, very big change to the gameplay. While you still match three, you do not just get a turn and that is that. You now have a couple of seconds to make as many moves as you can! It is very frantic stuff and it forces you to try and think two or three moves ahead. If you get it just right, you can actually clear a board on your first move! It is very exciting when this happens by the way!

Fun To A Degree!

Look, I love what they have done with Puzzle Quest 3 as far as the gameplay goes. The way the enemies attack and the new timed mechanic for making our moves is awesome. However, this is a free to play game, and with that comes the usual BS that you would expect. You can level up your stuff, but this requires resources. Resources which you are more than welcome to spend real world money on of course or grind at a snail’s pace to earn. The whole game is on a timer where you earn stuff as the timers count down, I cannot stress how much I hate this! Just let me pay a one off fee and let me enjoy the game!

As I write this, I must say that Puzzle Quest 3 is not yet fully released to the public. However, from what I have experienced so far, the new gameplay changes are great and a massive improvement, and a great evolution for the series.

Pros:

• I love how bright the whole fantasy setting of the game is
• The way enemies attack gives them more personality
• I love the new way we get to make our moves
• You have five classes to pick from

Cons:

• You will have to spend money to get far in the game
• Or, you can grind or wait for hours on end, I hate this free to play nonsense!
