There’s something about the medieval period that draws on the imagination of the world. We dream of dragons and magic, potions and a world before science made things feel a bit too real. Potion Shop Simulator blends a little magic and medieval together in a fantastical simulator about running your very own potion shop. The game opens with a quick story explaining how you came to be in the fantasy world, voiced with a charming actor who’s accent fits the genre. Through this opening you learn that the economy is bad and everyone wants at least 5 years of experience - something you don’t have fresh out of Wizard U. After a lengthy search, you discover a potion shop in the farthest reaches of the land willing to hire you - but you don’t know anything about the plants or people that live there.
A Magical Beginning
Luckily, a dragon is willing to give you a quick tutorial to get you up to speed. You learn the basics of running your shop and gathering plants from them, and then they disappear without a trace. It’s up to you to do the best, from dealing with cranky customers of all shapes and sizes, to coming up with new and exciting potions to sell.
Gameplay
The game plays out similarly to nearly every other game in the genre. If you’ve played Tavern Manager Simulator, you’re pretty close to understanding the rules of Potion Shop Simulator, with a few key differences. Gameplay includes picking up trash to keep the potion shop clean, going out into the fields to pick herbs, and experimenting with these herbs to craft potions. A nice feature of the game is that all of the potions aren’t simply given to you. Players have to experiment to unlock all potions and offer a full line of products.
There’s a wide range of different fantasy people who live in the village, and they have different needs and personalities. You’ll have to keep their needs in mind and handle them differently to get the best results. You’ll also need to make use of the other villager’s services in the game, such as the carpenter, to improve your shop’s appeal. Appeal is very important, because the more attractive your shop is, the more clients will come. Appeal not only attracts more customers, it attracts more important customers, such as the knights of the realm.
Co-Op Available
One key difference in this simulator from many other sims is that co-op is available. While solo play is the predominant version of the game, it’s sometimes nice to be able to play with friends.
Some Minor Bugs
This is a new game, so it’s understandable if a few bugs still exist. One annoying one repeatedly noted by players is that there seems to be an issue with quests not being cleared from the quest log.
Fortunately, the developers are actively working on the game, and it seems that this issue will likely be taken care of.
Potion Shop Simulator is an enjoyable, relaxing simulator. The game never makes you feel pressured or frustrated, but it does offer you plenty to do. This is a great game for people who enjoys simulation games and have been hoping for a fantasy twist.
