Pokemon Ultra Violet

Ready for a revitalized adventure through Kanto unlike anything you've experienced before? Pokemon Ultra Violet is a fan-made ROM hack that takes an aging classic and breathes new life into it with hundreds of enhancements and revolutionary features catered specifically to completionists.

While not an official release, Ultra Violet proves even a non-canon game can deliver an unforgettable experience. Every aspect of the familiar Kanto journey has been lovingly remastered and turbocharged for a fresh, challenging experience that still honors what made the original so special. The addition of every Pokemon from the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen generation is something that every trainer with a quirk for filling their Pokedex desperately needs.

Fill Your Pokedex

Completing the Pokedex is a dream come true in Pokemon Ultra Violet. All Pokemon from the first three generations - over 380 in total - are catchable within a single game, meaning no more trading or multiple purchases are needed to catch 'em all. This romhack also lets you catch your own starter Pokemon, choosing from all three Kanto starters as well as select Johto and Hoenn starters.

New evolutions, trade evolutions, and legendary Pokemon await discovery across Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn, begging to be captured and analyzed. For any player who's ever yearned to compile a "national" Pokedex in one definitive edition, Ultra Violet makes that dream finally come true – and then some.

The Mysterious 4-Point Isle

A true highlight is the addition of 4-Points Isle, an all-new tropical island paradise where players can catch every Generation 3 Pokemon. Reach this hidden locale by speaking to the girl in the southernmost house in Vermillion City, then board a ferry to adventure on its virgin shores.

Here you'll find an abundance of new areas, events, and storylines tailored to make even longtime Pokemon fans feel like they're exploring uncharted territory. Wander tropical jungles and pristine beaches teeming with unfathomable creatures from Hoenn waiting to be captured.

The concept is similar to what we saw in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen and the Sevii Islands. However, Ultra Violet also includes event-exclusive Pokemon like Mew and Celebi into the mix to create the ultimate Pokemon-catching frenzy.

Better Quality of Life

Quality-of-life tweaks abound to make the experience smoother and more accessible for players of all types. For instance, evolution-inducing items replace the need for trading or multiple games, removing roadblocks for solo players.

Various other small improvements streamline the countless nuances found even within the most optimized official releases. The collective result is a game that retains the nostalgic spirit of the originals while removing unnecessary hurdles, ensuring all players can enjoy Kanto to the fullest without excessive hassle.

In summary, Pokemon Ultra Violet far surpasses expectations at every turn. A fully catchable national Pokedex coupled with the option to catch your starter and a plethora of additional features provides a fresh, exhilarating twist on the Pokemon Fire Red and Pokemon Leaf Green classics.

Game Reviews

Pokemon Ultra Violet takes us way back to earlier gaming with this rom hack. The game centers around the Kanto region, and lets you collect 3 generations of Pokemon. The main focus of Pokemon Ultra Violet isn’t becoming the best Pokemon trainer, but actually the best Pokemon researcher.

This rom hack hasn’t been edited in many years but is still favored by the Pokemon community. You will need a copy of Pokemon Fire Red to play it. You’ll also need to find a safe patch to download, which can be challenging.

New Island Quest

Since this is a port of Pokemon Fire Red, most of the game will be familiar to players who have played Pokemon Fire Red before. Pokemon Ultra Violet does offer one new quest however, the island quest. Accepting this quest sends you to 4-point isle.

4-Point Isle is the one place in the game where you can get Pokemon from the Hoenn region. You’ll have to work to get the island accessible however, as it is opened in small sections as you explore.

Many New Pokemons Available

The hack also makes Pokemon from other regions available. There’s the Kanto region of course, the Hoenn region on the new island, and also Jhoto region Pokemon. On top of this, the hack makes shiny Pokemon appear more often.

Unlike in many other hacks, these Pokemon aren’t just handed to you. You will have to work to find legendary Pokemon just like before.

Graphics and Sound

The sound is the exact same as the Pokemon Fire Red track with no changes. There are additional graphics due to the changes made in the hack, and these changes are very well done. The shiny graphics use the same coloration as the official Pokemon game, and blend seamlessly in with the original work.

This game was originally made for the Gameboy, porting over to the PC. While the graphics may not be impressive for a PC game, they are some of the best Gameboy had to offer.

Story

The story is the same as the original Fire Red, with just a few embellishments here and there. You can expect more places to explore, more caves, and the addition of items you couldn’t buy before. Otherwise, very little has changed.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Fire Red was a wonderful game that many people loved---Pokemon Ultra Violet just takes it a step further and adds more to that awesome story.

If you loved Pokemon Fire Red, you will love Pokemon Ultra Violet. It gives you the same authentic feel as the original game, but adds onto it many new Pokemon and places to explore. If you found yourself speeding through the original game quickly and just want more content, or just want access to the original on PC, this is a great place to start.

Pros:

  • Lots of New Areas to Explore
  • More Pokemon
  • Seamless graphic integration

Cons:

  • This hack hasn’t been updated in a long time

Over the past couple of decades, Pokemon has come to dominate the video game space. With almost 80 titles under its belt, including spinoffs, you would think that the franchise would begin to slow down. However, the opposite is true, in that we get at least one new Pokemon video game every single year. While that’s great news for younger fans who are growing up with later generations of Pokemon, those of us who were there right at the beginning might be unable to keep up with the releases, being in our 20s and 30s and juggling family life with work, etc. Thankfully, those wonderful first few games from the Game Boy era are being kept alive with modified versions like Pokemon Ultra Violet. If you’re an older Pokemon fan looking to get a shot of nostalgia with a revived classic, here’s everything you need to know about Pokemon Ultra Violet.

Just How You Remember, But Better

Pokemon Ultra Violet is a “hacked” version of the original Game Boy Advance game Pokemon Fire Red, and it was created by single developer LockSmithArmy. It is modified so that players will be able to play through that classic Pokemon story on a single save file, all on their own, and still be able to catch every Pokemon. This on its own is a huge upgrade, because, in the past, several Pokemon were exclusive to one “version” of the game or another. For instance, in Pokemon Fire Red, you can find an Oddish in a specific area, while in Pokemon Leaf Green, the alternate version of the same game, that location will instead house a Bellsprout. Ultra Violet removes that barrier, effectively making the best version of Fire Red and Leaf Green.

Gotta Catch ‘Em All… Again!

Another benefit of Pokemon Ultra Violet is that LockSmithArmy continued to work on it after its initial release. As if having every Pokemon from Fire Red and Leaf Green, being able to obtain both the Kabuto and Omanyte Fossils, adding both Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee to your party after defeating the Karate Master Pokemon trainer, and even including Mew, LockSmithArmy went on to include an entire extra generation of Pokemon and new features in later updates. Update 1.20 added 4-Points Isle, a new island that players can travel to and collect EVERY third-generation Pokemon, bumping the number of Pokemon from 250 or so for gens one and two, to 385! That is a ton of Pokemon for a project being made by one person in their free time.

They also removed the evolution requirements that certain Pokemon had, where you needed to trade the Pokemon with an item in order for it to evolve, making every Pokemon and its evolutions easily attainable.

Pros

  • Almost 400 Pokemon to catch
  • Combines Leaf Green and Fire Red in the best possible way
  • Removes barriers to gaining every Pokemon evolution
  • Going back to the Fire Red/Leaf Green game is a huge nostalgia hit

Cons

  • Must be played on PC through a download
  • Newer players may not like the clunkiness of the older games
