Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi

Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi is a dungeon crawler RPG and one of the most interesting ones to come out this year! I am actually a pretty big fan of the people behind this game and I think that this is their best game to date. One of the main things that drew me to this game was that it was that while most dungeon crawler RPGs tend to be set in a fantasy world. This one, while it does have some fantasy elements is based more around the world of horror and as a fan of horror, that was something that greatly appealed to me.

Going Down The Hole!

The game is set in Tokyo in the 70s and a giant hole to an evil underground dungeon has opened up. Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi has you playing as an Undernaut. A person that is in charge of a team of 6 people that are hired to venture into this place to explore and bring back the vast resources that are down there. Of course, things are not quite what they seem at first.

The corporation that hires these Undernauts sees their “employees as nothing more than expendable assets. Really, when you break it all down, they are the true villains of this game. I really liked the premise here and thought that the story was told pretty well and I was invested in what was going on.

Playing The Loop

Have you played a dungeon crawler RPG before? Then you will feel pretty comfortable with what Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi is offering. This has a kind of old school soul about it all. You will explore the dungeon in first-person, filling out the map as you go. You will find resources as you go and you need these to progress by making and opening doors, making and using ladders, and so on. You have a party of 6 and the class and job system is pretty expansive, my personal favorite being the Wrestler Fighter.

The combat in the game is done in turn-based way, but it is very strategic. You have a team of six and you need to decide who is at the front and who is at the back. Having a well balanced party really is key to progressing pretty far. There are random battles, but for the most part, you can see the enemies on the screen. I do have to say that I did experience the game crashing on me on more occasions than I would have liked!

Come On Man, You Got Blood On The Floor!

Visually, Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi is a fantastic looking game. I really am impressed with how good this game looks. Remember how I said that this was a horror game? Well, there is a lot of monster, blood, and guts in this game and it is done very well. Everything has a very smartly drawn, anime kind of vibe to it and in all, I was very impressed with the visuals. It also boasts a pretty impressive soundtrack too that is very fitting for the disturbing images you will be seeing.

I had a great time playing through Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi. I thought that the setting, the storytelling, and the gameplay all came together very well to make it an addicting and rewarding experience.

Pros:

• I really liked the setting of the game
• As someone who likes horror, I got a kick out of the style of the game
• The combat system in the game is deep and gives you a ton of ways to go about it
• I found myself wanting to keep playing for just a bit longer quite a lot!

Cons:

• I did have this game crash on me way more times than is ok!
• Some of the imagery is pretty damn disturbing and shocking
