'Paw Patrol Mighty Pups: Save Adventure Bay' is the video game under a franchise with the same name. If you haven't heard of it - the brand features adorable pups, each with unique search and rescue skills. Honestly, it's wholesome enough that any person could fall in love with them - probably why the concept translates so well to a game.
The franchise that has sold millions of toys and gained many viewers for its adventure-packed shows now seeks to ply its trade on a video game. I, for one, am not against the idea of playing as a group of heroic dogs keeping their home fun-filled and A-OK. Even if it is targeted at children - there could be a lot of fun to be had!
There's a Hero Inside All Dogs
The breakdown of Paw Patrol is that a boy named Ryder and his pack of dogs are high-fliers. They solve issues by taking on roles like firefighters and policemen to keep order in their town. The game continues with that premise - although this time - the dogs have turned into superheroes. This isn't by chance - it's to fall in parallel with the upcoming Paw Patrol movie.
Yes, Paw Patrol Mighty Pups: Save Adventure Bay is for kids - meaning that all hardcore game mechanics will be stripped down to their basics. The game features various missions controlling different dogs - collecting items, bouncing on platforms, and pushing and tugging objects. You'll be solving basic puzzles and overcoming minor obstacles to help Adventure Bay's careless residents.
Though slightly more open, the game resembles a bit more of a platformer - omitting combat entirely and adding a polished cartoony art style in line with the show. Each level is basically a playable episode to match the attention span of their target market. It provides enough color, silliness, and intrigue to keep them occupied.
It's all pretty straightforward. All the levels, minigames, and side achievements are by no means revolutionary - but we can take solace in the idea that it's made like this for children. It's hard to find anything wrong with the game when you think of it that way. It's a fun-loving, pup adoring platformer that is perfectly playable by all - albeit ridiculously easy to complete.
It's Not Urgent, But You Can Save Adventure Bay
Comparing 'Paw Patrol Mighty Pups: Save Adventure Bay' to similar concepts puts analysis into perspective - it's pretty good. Most publishers would sanction kids game development to milk cash with minimal effort - that is not the case. There seemingly has had a lot of polish applied to it to make the game entertaining for children and accessible. Even adults can find some challenges in each mission's levels.
However, the game's simple nature is not something you will want to go out of your way for. But it's comforting to know that there is an effort being put into kids' games these days - not just a rushed corporate slog like Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers. If you happen to be looking for a video game for your kids, though - this might be the winner.
- Well polished children's game albeit quite basic in structure
- Seamless gameplay that doesn't overwhelm any player
- The art style in line with the visuals in the franchise
- Playable missions are basic
- Multiplayer elements are confusing
- Camera angles are fixed and throw players off with movement
