Neon Blight

Welcome to the cyberpunk world of Neon Blight. I hope you packed some guns, because this game has you both owning a gun shop, and running around blasting enemies into nothingness with your own supply. Its your job to keep the gig economy of wannabe heroes flush with guns and to sort out any other issues that might rear its ugly head. If you want a game that offers you a few interesting gameplay avenues to explore, this is without a doubt one that you will be interested in. Ready? Good, lets get into it.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Neon Blight is a top-down, roguelite, bullet-time combat interspersed with store ownership. That’s right, you get to own a store in this. You are a gunrunner, meaning you will find guns on your expeditions into the wilds, where you can bring them back, upgrade them and/or sell them on to your clients. You can customize the shop, choose where things sit and what weapons are on display. It’s fun to make something feel like it’s really your own in this world. Selling on the guns isn’t the only aspect of the game, as you do get to spend a lot of time using them also. There is a fantastic Enter the Gungeon mixed with Binding of Isaac style combat present all throughout the game. You shoot, run, roll out of the way of bullets and defeat enemies by the wave. There is also a brilliant selection of boss fights available for you to battle through. Some are definitely easier than others, but some provide a fantastic challenge.

Visuals

The visuals in Neon Blight are absolutely stunning. The city itself, although reserved to a few smaller areas, is utterly gorgeous to behold. The neon drenched city streets, illuminated by shop signs and lightning makes for a truly ambient experience that few games can touch. It does appear to always be raining but as someone who loves the rain, I am a big fan.

Story

This game has a rich story that follows the player-controlled Lara. A former police officer, Lara has since become a gun store owner and gun for hire due to a terrible event that occurred 15 years ago. You will learn about this terrible past in flashbacks that appear in boss fights.

The story starts off strong and hints at this amazing conspiracy story that could follow you all throughout but it loses steam a little as the game progresses. Thankfully, the story can take a backseat to the stelar gameplay that will keep you coming back for more.

Music

The music in this title is actually pretty good. After a while, it can kind of start to turn into background fuzz but every now and again you will get to hear a tune you love and then you’re right back in it. This is something that occurs in pretty much every game so I wouldn’t worry too much.
