Moto Racer Advance

When it comes to racing games on the GBA, the quality and selection is sorely lacking. While there are a few stand out performers, most of the titles on the market just don't do a good enough job of representing the genre. Being a huge fan of the Moto Racer games on PSX, I had high expectations and hopes for Moto Racer Advance and thankfully, I was not disappointed.

Moto Racer Advance mixes dirt bike racing and street bike racing to create one the most balanced racing games to grace a handheld system to date. The first thing you will notice is the tight control. Responsive controls are a must in racing games and Moto Racer will have you feeling like you are strapped to the seat of the bike holding on for dear life. Both dirt racing and street racing play great and once you unlock the traffic modes, you will find yourself facing not only the opponents but oncoming traffic as well.

The track design also shines. It is very clear that a lot of attention was placed on creating good courses. On the dirt tracks, there were plenty of hills and jumps and on the street tracks there was just the right number of long straights followed by sharp cornering. Learning each track is vital and usually takes 2-3 races but after that, you will rip through them with precision.

The graphics were very good with one minor exception. For the good, the riders look great and you can easily distinguish between the dirt bikes and the street bikes. The street bike racers would lean deeply into the turns and remain more aerodynamic whereas the dirt bike racers would sit more erect. The one exception, which I can't really blame on the game but is still a limitation, was the sight distance. Because of the GBA screen, you could never see very far in front of you forcing you to memorize each track to be successful. This was particularly bad on the dirt tracks as you went up dirt hills and over the other side. You could not see anything so you basically held on for life and tried to react if a turn was at the bottom of the hill.

Overall, this is a great racing game that is a ton of fun. You can link up 4 GBA's and race against your buddies providing a great multiplayer experience. If you have been waiting for a good racer for your GBA, the wait is finally over.
