Metro: Redux

Metro Redux is a remake of Metro 2033 and a remaster of Metro Last Light combined into one high value and entertaining package. There are a large number of changes to the first game while the second received mostly a few tweaks and graphical improvements.

Metro Series Overview

Metro is a post-apocalyptic FPS series set in the world of the Metro novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky. They are set in Russia following the lives and struggles of the survivors of a nuclear war now forced to live in the underground metro tunnel system to escape the radiation and monsters of the surface world.

The video game series features a lot of unique mechanics, such as the use of ammo for both combat and as a currency to enforce a survival horror type atmosphere as you struggle to either waste money to fight for your life or endure more pain to preserve your long term buying potential. The series is brutal enough on its base difficulty and gets only more punishing in its signature Ranger mode which limits your resources further and ads in even more survival elements.

Redux Changes

2033 has received the vast majority of the improvements as the game is now a full-fledged remake rebuilt from the ground up in Last Light’s engine. The biggest changes this includes are:

• Improved and added mechanics. Everything added in Last Light such as improved shooting controls, screen wiping, hud upgrades and more are all added in retroactively into 2033 making it a vastly unique and satisfying improvement over the original.

• Redesigned levels. Using the power of more modern consoles and hardware, the game now features an entirely remade set of levels that combines older ones without loading screens and transitions in between. This results in a much more fluid experience that feels a lot more realistic and immersive as the game is closer to being one big world instead of many smaller pieces like before.

• Gameplay options. Another large upgrade is the ability to change the game’s entire balance and feel as you choose from either the classic Survival mode or the newly added Spartan mode. Survival is closer to the original game and feature a harsher difficulty and more tense mechanics while Spartan lets you loose in an experience closer to a more typical action heavy FPS.

• Graphics. New textures, meshes and every other small thing you can think of have been added in to make this game even more beautiful than it already was. Some cutscenes have also been retweeted to feel more up close and personal.
