Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2

Capcom are back with Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 which features the second half of the MMX series. I know that the X series is a bit more divisive with fans, but I think they are fun, and the more story driven nature of them is something I have always thought was pretty cool. Today we are looking at what games make up this collection and how it stands up to the other collections of Mega Man games that are out there.

The PlayStation One!

What is really cool about the Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 is that it is a collection that is spanning console generations. Two of the games in this set are Mega Man X5 and Mega Man X6. These are games that were released on the original PlayStation and that is pretty cool. They are solid shooters with some epic platforming in them and I think they are decent entries in the Mega Man X series.

The PlayStation Two!

The other part of the Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 is Mega Man X7 and Mega Man X8 and these were released on the PlayStation 2. These were as you would expect a pretty decent leap over the PS1 games. I remember being excited for Mega Man X7 when it was released for the PlayStation 2 and found it to be quite disappointing It was not bad, but not the amazing game I thought it was going to be . Mega Man X8 on the other hand was a fantastic leap and a game that I hold in very high regard. The way it switches from 2D to 3D was handled very well. Actually, when I first fired up this collection, I did jump straight into X8!

The X Challenge Mode

In this new mode that is exclusive to the Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2, you can really see just how good of a Mega Man player you are. The gimmick in this mode is that you have to take on two bosses at once! It is way more challenging than you would think and it really does force you to think about how you attack. I had a blast with this and think it is a major highlight of the collection.

Dripping With Fan Service

The four games and the new game mode are awesome, but there is one other thing that makes Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 such a great purchase for a Mega Man fan. It has so many awesome extras that I am kind of struggling to know where to start. Well, there is an animated movie which is fun. However, it is all the production art, old commercials and so on that, I got a kick out of. I actually dabble in Mega Man merch so seeing a section dedicated to Mega Man merchandise was something I got a massive kick out of.

I know that the X series is an acquired taste and if I had to pick, I would pick the classic series. However, I do think that X has a real charm and this Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 is a great way to experience the second part of the series.

Pros:

• Three of these games I would probably rate at least 8/10 on their own!
• The new game mode is challenging and a lot of fun
• I loved the various bits of Mega Man history you could check out
• The games look, play, and feel just like they did originally

Cons:

• I have to be honest and say that Mega Man X7 is not a good game
• The X series has always been a bit of an acquired taste
