Mahoutsukai no Yoru

I will admit that Mahoutsukai no Yoru is a “game” that I had been putting off playing for quite a while. It is a visual novel that is held in very high regard by those that have played it and it is probably one of the more popular ones to be released in the last decade or so. It is worth noting that this is a passive visual novel so do not expect to jump into this and have a ton of choices to make as you move the plot forward.

Witches Of The 80s

What really made me decide that now was the time for me to experience what Mahoutsukai no Yoru has to offer was the settings. The game takes place in the late 80s and I just love this time period. Granted my knowledge of Japan in the 80s is rather limited, but it was still a setting that not many other visual novels have tackled.

The story is great and it is about the world of magic and witches. Alice is a witch who lives in a large mansion and she is tasked with teaching Aoko the mystic arts and to help showcase the world of magic. What starts off as a kind of “teaching” story soon ends up being more sinister as strange things are happening in the mansion which featured an antagonist that I did not see coming.

Extreme Fine Art

The story that Mahoutsukai no Yoru tells is very interesting, but a huge reason that I got so invested into the story was because of the amazing art. This is some of the best art that I have seen in a visual novel. It also features a bit of animation too which does help make things even more exciting, especially during this fight scene that happens.

The game also has a very solid soundtrack. They perfectly picked each piece of music so that it fits the tone of what you are reading. The whole game from a presentational point of view could not have been done any better in my opinion.

Going Where It Takes You

Here is where I would normally tell you about the gameplay, but Mahoutsukai no Yoru does not actually feature any “gameplay”. I know that this will automatically make this a game that is not for a vast number of people.

However, those of you who like a passive visual novel every now and again are going to enjoy the story that this game is telling you.

8.5

I thought that this was a great, great story. I love things that are about magic and witches so that made the story click for me very early on. I also feel that it has a great twist that you do not see coming and that gets you even more invested and it gives you a desire to go all the way to the end. I get that the passive nature of this with no choices to make can make it not suitable for some.

Pros:

  • It has some very interesting characters
  • I loved who the antagonist turned out to be
  • It features some truly amazing artwork
  • The soundtrack is great too!
  • If you like stories about magic and witches you will enjoy this

Cons:

  • It is a passive experience
  • I would have loved it even more if it had full English voice acting
