Loot River

We all like loot, right, and lots of it? What if there was a game that had rivers of loot just waiting for your collection? You'd be lucky to come across Loot River, and those concepts tickled your fancy. Here we have an action roguelike game all about the rewards of dungeon crawling, where you can reap all the treasures from overcoming the challenges that await.

Yet still, you can't quite put the finger on what the idea is behind Loot River. Is it a game that will inspire the player for the loot awaits? What's the higher purpose behind the haul? But what's more important here is the game fun when the whole concept is based around acquiring loot? Let's get in that boat and head down that river.

Rivers of Gold

Instantly, there seems to be a predefined list of boxes ticked for trending video games. There are roguelike mechanics, retro graphics, and randomly generated dungeons. That box-ticking alone sets an alarming precedent for Loot River. It depends on trending mechanics to create the core gameplay.

That standard amalgamation of mechanics doesn't help Loot River stand out, and it reflects as you venture into the game. There appears to be more focus on ensuring that all the popular elements of current indie games are there rather than creating a fun experience. Combat is average, puzzles are strewn all over the place, the narrative is lacking, and the objectives seem meaningless.

Yes, loot is cool, but your consistent acquiring of new weapons and gear doesn't seem to go anywhere. The only real purpose seems to be able to test your wit and combat abilities in procedurally generated dungeons. Still, a few hours in, with an upgraded arsenal and skills, you don't feel much rhyme or reason to continue down the Loot River.

The integrated mechanics and gameplay have few flaws besides questionable design decisions in the game's favor. But again, it's ticking off boxes of what appears popular across a throe of other indie games at the moment. Bottom line, there's little that makes Loot River stand out, and it feels like it's just another roguelike game that will be lost to the void of time.

Just Floating Around

It's hard to pinpoint where Loot River went wrong in its development. Indeed there would have been a lot of potential to incorporate unique ideas and gameplay. After all, the roguelike genre doesn't have many boundaries for innovation or creativity. But no, Loot River played it safe and decided to be the underling of games like Mana Spark.

Loot River's potential has made it a shame that there weren't many risks for standout gameplay. The game is palatable and probably worth a try for roguelike genre enthusiasts. But don't expect anything spectacular, simply because there isn't anything you haven't seen before. There are even some aspects of the game that seem unnecessary and frustrating.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Combat and puzzle mechanics are polished
  • Never the same dungeon twice for endless gameplay
  • There is an element of intrigue about the rewards system

Cons:

  • It feels like a copy-paste job of trendy video game mechanics and aesthetics.
  • The narrative is uninspired
  • The game loses its raison d'etre pretty quickly
