Nintendo is world-renowned for its various IP. Nintendo-exclusive games tend to be the best of the best, and always serve as technical showcases for their new hardware. Each generation, whether it be handheld, console, or hybrid, has featured one or more groundbreaking titles upon its initial launch. The Nintendo 3DS was no different. Early on in that handheld’s life cycle, Nintendo released an updated version of one of their most beloved classics. That game was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. This game took that original story and its revolutionary gameplay, updated the graphics, tweaked a few mechanics, and added 3D features to make it compatible with Nintendo’s new hardware gimmick. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is every bit as fun and memorable as the game's original release, and if you’re looking to experience the quintessential version of a Nintendo classic, then here is everything you need to know.

The Classic Experience, With Modifications

As a game that was released on the Nintendo 3DS, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D made use of that handheld’s many features and extra input options. For instance, the game made use of the 3DS’s lower touchscreen as a way to manage your inventory on the fly. The touchscreen was also the primary way to play the game’s critical Ocarina songs, in which you tapped various notes that appeared on the touch screen. When aiming, you could either use the 3DS’s gyroscopic input to aim by moving your console, or the more traditional analog stick aiming system.

All of these modifications serve to modernize The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and bring it into a new generation of hardware and fans. In action, Ocarina of Time 3D feels just as good as playing a more recent title from that time, like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, despite Ocarina of Time originally being released way back in 1998.

Brand New Modes

For those who have played Ocarina of Time to death and know the game back to front, there are new modes in Ocarina of Time 3D that add extra fun and new gameplay options. Besides the classic Ocarina of Time campaign, Ocarina of Time 3D also has modified versions of the Master Quest dungeons, as well as a mirrored overworld option for those who know the game too well.

If you need a real challenge, there is a “Boss Challenge” mode that takes you through the game’s bosses in sequence. And if that isn’t challenging enough, there is a Master Quest version of Boss Challenge that ups the ante by having mirrored versions of the boss arenas while also having the bosses do double damage. Just a few hits and you're done! You’ll need to have every boss pattern memorized to get through that challenge.

Pros

  • The same classic Ocarina of Time Experience
  • Lots of gameplay improvements
  • New modes add replayability to the game

Cons

  • Even if you’ve never played the game before, it is a little short
  • Boss Challenge mode can feel uneven at times
