Imagine a JRPG starring one of the most influential American rappers of all time, and you get the fascinatingly strange Kanye Quest 3030. Featuring a bizarre plot with tons of references to rap culture, this might actually be one of the weirdest RPGs ever made, and one of the most impressively competent RPG Maker games as well.

Time travel, dystopias, Final Fantasy-like combat, and even a secret cult lie hidden in the wonderful mess that is Kanye Quest 3030. That said, sometimes, you’ve got to know when weird gets too weird, and this can cause some casual players to feel left outside of an elaborate inside joke.

Fly to the Future

The plot of Kanye Quest 3030 begins innocently enough: Kanye West, renowned rapper and self-proclaimed lyrical genius, goes outside to take out the garbage. What he doesn’t expect is to run into a mysterious portal that transports him to the far future of 3030.

In this dystopic reality, America is run by a clone of Lil B, who claims to be a god. However, when things seem direst, Kanye arrives to fulfill a prophecy that claims that he, along with some of history’s most popular rappers, is destined to defeat the evil Lil B.

From a narrative point of view, Kanye Quest 3030 is a game that seems devoted to its rapper audience. Considering the sheer amount of obscure references and inside jokes contained in the game’s narrative, players with just a cursory knowledge of who Kanye West is might feel lost with some parts of the plot.

Basic Gameplay

Being that Kanye Quest 3030 is an RPG Maker game, don’t expect the gameplay to be anything extraordinary. Yout party is made up of different rappers, each with a unique set of skills.

As you wander the streets of 3030’s America, you’ll find other rappers challenging you to duels. These turn-based battles are the usual affair one might find in any basic JRPG like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest XI.

There’s not much depth to the combat itself, being as barebones as the overall gameplay. This is a game that’s hard to take seriously, and it’s clear that it was intended more as an inside joke than a serious gaming experience.

Visuals and Sound

Don’t get your hopes up by the prospect of the game featuring some of the most prominent rappers in the music industry. As an unlicensed game, the rights to most rap songs are out of bounds for Phenix, the creator of Kanye Quest 3030.

As we mentioned before, the game was made using RPG Maker: a tool revered for its versatility when it comes to making simple RPGs, but also known for its bland visuals and overall low-quality presentation.
