If you are a fan of fighting games, then 2024 looks like it is going to be a great year for the genre. Many exciting titles are being released in the early part of the year, and one title that matches that is Bandai’s latest, Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash.

The game itself takes its insight from the 2020 anime adaptation of the popular manga Jujutsu Kaisen. This builds on the story of the manga and anime and adds its own interesting hooks to make the fighting game more than just a re-skinned generic manga fight. So, what does Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash bring to the table? What can we expect ahead of its release in early 2024?

Relive The First Season

The game itself will be based on the first season of the popular anime series and will put players in control of the protagonist, Yuji Itadori. You will work your way across Japan in a bid to help stave off the end of humanity by fighting various creatures of supernatural form. Known as “Curses”, your job is simple: rid Japan of these demons or look forward to the world coming to a pretty abrupt end.

At the time of writing, the roster boasts some 15 different fighters. Matches will be a 2v2 affair, with you able to fight as a team of two against the CPU or against others online. Popular characters from the show, which are included, are the likes of Aoi Todo, Jogo, Kento Nanami, Yuta Okkotsu, Satoru Gojo, and Suguru Geto, to name but a few. Fans of the anime should find plenty of fan service waiting for them in this game.

The combat itself is pretty smooth, too. It looks great, with a very distinctive style that pays homage to the anime which itself pays homage to the manga. The end result is a fighting game that could stand up on its own two feet against the likes of the Naruto and Dragon Ball fighting games.

A Bandai Namco Standard Fighter (8/10)

The first thing to note, then, is that if you have played a Bandai Namco fighting game before then you have basically already played Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash. It follows the same styling as their usual fighting games – which is not a criticism. It means that the format feels very familiar, and this makes it easy for people to enjoy playing on a regular basis.

The gameplay loop is simple, with that typical ‘easy to learn, hard to master’ style that often makes the Bandai Namco games such a popular place to start for fighting game fans. While it only covers the first season, meaning that not as much happens as one might expect in the story mode, there is much to enjoy about what is present in Cursed Clash. It is not perfect, but Jujutsu Kaisen fans should find a very enjoyable product waiting for them.

Great attention to detail on the visuals, creating something very close to the original style
Combat is smooth and easy to get to grips with, making it ideal for newbies to the genre
Addictive style and a varied roster helps to keep fights from getting too stale or boring

Cons

Only follows the first season of the anime, leading to some bloating and filler content
Do not deviate from the Bandai Namco theme, for better or for worse
