iRacing is a popular racing simulation game developed by iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations, which has been providing high-quality racing experiences for over a decade. It is designed to provide the most realistic racing experience possible, complete with accurate physics, realistic car models, and high-quality graphics. In this review, we will explore the game's features, gameplay, and overall experience, and provide a final score.

Racing games have come a long way in recent years, and iRacing stands out as one of the most realistic and immersive racing simulations available. iRacing has a vast community of racing enthusiasts who compete in races and championships across the globe. The game is known for its attention to detail, and it has been praised by professional racers for its realistic driving physics and car behavior.

A complex racing sim

iRacing is a game that caters to both casual and professional racers. It features an extensive collection of licensed cars and tracks, from NASCAR and IndyCar to GT and sports car racing. The game also has an online racing community that allows players to compete against each other in various championships, time trials, and events. The game's matchmaking system ensures that players are matched with other racers of similar skill levels, making the races fair and competitive.

One of the most significant features of iRacing is its physics engine. It is incredibly accurate and simulates the effects of tire wear, fuel consumption, and aerodynamic downforce. Players can customize their car setups and adjust the car's suspension, gearing, and tire pressures to optimize their performance on the track. The game also features an advanced damage model, where crashes and collisions can significantly affect the car's performance and handling.

iRacing is a game that requires skill and practice to master. The game's physics engine is so realistic that it takes time to understand and learn how to control the cars accurately. Players can customize their control settings, but they must also learn how to use the brakes, throttle, and steering to control the car's movement. The game's tutorial system is helpful for new players and provides guidance on the game's various features and settings.

The online racing community is where the game truly shines. Players can join races and championships with other racers from around the world, and the game's matchmaking system ensures that the races are competitive and challenging. The game also features a replay system that allows players to watch their races from different angles and analyze their performance.

Main contender?

There are many other racing games available, but few can match the realism and depth of iRacing. One game that comes close is Assetto Corsa, which is another racing simulator that focuses on providing a realistic driving experience. Assetto Corsa has similar physics and graphics to iRacing, but it has a smaller online community and fewer licensed cars and tracks.

Review: 8/10

Overall, iRacing is an excellent racing simulator that provides a realistic and immersive racing experience. The game's attention to detail and realism make it stand out from other racing games, and its online community ensures that players always have someone to compete against.

However, the game's steep learning curve and expensive hardware requirements may deter some players. With that said, iRacing earns a solid 9 out of 10 for its impressive attention to detail, online racing community, and realistic physics engine.

Pros:

  • Extremely realistic physics and car behavior
  • Extensive collection of licensed cars and tracks
  • Online racing community with fair matchmaking
  • Advanced damage model and car customization options

Cons:

  • Steep learning curve for new players
  • Requires expensive hardware to run at its full potential
  • Lack of offline content for players who prefer single-player racing

Game Reviews

Ok, so as we start this iRacing review I must confess that I am not a huge fan of racing sims, I am much more of an arcade racer, take the corner at 100 mph kind of racing fan so please keep that in mind going forward. However, there is no denying that what has been created here is something very special and I did dabble in it for a short while. However, much of the praise that I am going to be heaping on the game comes from a friend of mine who is a die hard racing sim guy and he says that this is one of the best racing games that he has played in years!

Being Behind The Wheel

The driving engine in iRacing is one of the most if not the most realistic engines that has ever been in a driving game. The attention to detail here is just staggering I am not just talking about the way that the cars handle, but it is all the little things like the temperature, the day night cycle, and the way that different tracks that are made all add up. This is probably as close to real racing as a video game has ever come!

The Human Touch

A huge part of the appeal of iRacing is that this game is all online and there are no AI racers! This is 100 percent about testing your skills against other racers and seeing just how good a driver you are. The main game modes on offer here are the racing series and seasons where you will be competing for a title. You have four different racing styles that you can compete in which are, road, oval, dirt road, and dirt oval with each one having its own set of different races. It is worth noting that this game is designed to be played with a racing wheel, you can play it with a controller, but the racing wheel adds even more to the realism.

Earning Your License

iRacing has a licensing system in the game, but it is not exactly the same as the one that is in Gran Turismo. Everyone who starts playing the game will start off as a rookie. However, you will get to progress through the licenses as you get better and better at the game. The license goes from D to A, but there is a special Pro License for those that get into the whole eSports aspect of the game. If you were to subscribe to the most basic offering that this has, you get more than enough content to get you out of that rookie class for every license.

Paying To Play

I would hate to guess how much money my buddy has spent on iRacing over the years! This is a game that has a subscription based model and there is a basic one that you can get which gives you access to over 20 tracks and 16 cars. That is a decent amount and due to the hardcore nature of the gameplay, it will keep you busy for a long time. After this, you have a ton of cars, tracks, and more that you can purchase to expand your game if you so wish.

Even though I am not the target audience for a game like iRacing, I can see why those who are into hardcore racing sim games are so into this. If you want to compete against other people and really test your driving skills, there is perhaps no better racing game out there right now. However, if you are something of a casual racing fan who enjoys more arcadey racers, you probably will not have as much fun with this game.

Pros:

  • The game has a very realistic look to it
  • You get a lot of stuff in the base subscription
  • This is a great game if you are into racing sims
  • It offers full racing wheel and VR support for even more realism

Cons:

  • This is not the game for you if you do not like racing sims
  • The subscription model could get very pricey for you if you get really into the game
